Tyre sizes 13" wheels

Post by Bjorn Belter » 04 Mar 2009 10:51 pm

My totally standard, unmodified 340 1.4 is getting ready for new tyres.
The current ones (on standard original Volvo alloys) are the 175x70x13 (as per 340 GL)

I want to keep the car standard with the possible exception of getting slightly wider tyres but using the same old wheels.

Do we know whether, say 185x70x13 or even 195x70x13 (if available) will fit and work OK?

Not a problem if not - happy to stay with the 175s.

Thanks.

185/60/13 would be better than a 70 profile IMHO.

Should be easy to get too.

175s on standard 13"s already look a bit "bulgy", bear in mind that the same rim was used for 155 and 165 width tyres as well. The standard specs were such that once you went above 175 width the profile got lower and different 14" wheels were used.

I'll dig the specs out this evening ...

Tom

BTW what Volvo alloys are you using? Hercules, "Black Beauty" or "Luclucs"?

OK, here's a random spec list from 1981:

5J x 13"
L and DL 155 SR 13
DLS 165 SR 13
GL 175/70 SR 13
GLS 185/70 SR 13 (note: I was wrong in my above post about 175s being the widest factory-spec on 13s ...)

5½J x 14"
DLS / GLS 185/60 HR 14

Cheers

I was running on 185/60 13 then changed to 195/60 13. Both were quite good with the 195 being slightly better. No change to feel of the steering. With the 195's you could actualy lift a back wheel if cornering to fast!

If you are after good road holding then you want at least 185/60's or even wider. Low profiles help reduce tyre roll but very low prifile (below 50) tends to make the ride harsh.

Thanks chaps.
I'm a firm believer in keeping things simple, so I think I'll stick with 175s.
I'll try and sort some pics soon.
The wheels are, i think, "version 2" as shown in a Volvo accessories brochure.
