Lowering clearence

Post by mrsoundcraft » 16 Jun 2009 11:11 pm

Hi. Ive nearly had My 340 for a week now, and have spent most of my free time reading through this forum. Its an obsession :P

I am planning on lowering the car but have a few questions.

With 2" lowering blocks and 3" springs will the car still clear speed bumps. Whats the risk of bursting the sump or fuel tank?

My other question is about Landrover 90 front shocks.
Dai gave me some valuable info and prices for suspension components (I plan to order a lot of the bits) so I am aware of the Spax adjustables. I would like these units in the future but don't want to spend all my money at once so it would be great to hear if the Landrover shocks are better than the stock shocks when lowered.

What are the standard front shocks like with the lowering springs on?

heyhey and welcome sm4
im sure some one will correct me but -
its probably best to replace the dampers as they are probably the originals, kyb do gas ones for about the same price as boge replacements, ive just orderd a set but havnt tried them yet! landy shocks are probably very stiff for the back, given that landys are substantially heavier and made to take 1/3rd of a ton in the back, and still look pretty good. to stiffent the back up its probably best to double leaf the rear, which i plan to do once i can get over to manchester to pick my second set up!
ive a feeling the front at -3" will be close to speed bumps, there is a set on my way to scunny that scrape mine as standard  the rear should be fine given that most people ive seen/read on here drop theirs by 2"
hope that helps and isnt complet drivvel!

Ben

Wwlcome to the forum dude.
Pretty much what what Ben said. Landys for a track car if you want it performance firm, but I'm not sure I'd be able to live with them on a daily.
My drop is 2in and speedbumps are no problem (but I always creep over at 5mph). I think youd be ok with-3 too IMO. I'm sure Nikdevs daily is down that or more and I'm sure Dai said Vickys 300 was down three inches without problems.
If your shocks are worn, change them when you do the springs. The lowering springs Dai does are updated, so they do improve handling, and you don't want to lose that improvement by way of old worn shocks.
Hope this helps mate. And get plenty of pics up.

Did I say TRACK?
I meant DRIFT.

i must have got those confused because all drifters confine their activities to the safety of a private track.

Kermit is 3'' (I guess) on the front, and speed bumps are a pain. I just avoid them now. Cant see you hitting the tank, its behind the rear wheels and tucked up. I'd worry about your sump more than anything.

The Main issue i have with my 3" front and 2" rear drop is the exhaust under the middle of the car. especailly if the exhaust rubbers are a bit tired/broken :0 but speed bumps arent really an issue. just take it easy.

I've skidded the tank loads on whites, never touched the sump due to the big crossmember thingy. GLT's you need to watch out for the box and diff too, it's a lot lower than 340's with the lower stock leaf's

Hi, thanks for all the advice. I still haven't taken any photos yet but I can tell you its white, got 5 doors a rear spoiler and a 1.4L engine.
I was getting some K-seal radiator stuff today and asked in the shop about KYB shocks while I was there. The guy told me the front shocks on the 340 were inserts, thats pretty much where the conversation ended.

Ive had a little look at KYB inserts on camskill, but Im not sure which are compatible, as none of them say they're compatible with the volvo.

Im probably asking to much but Im looking for good but cheap shocks for the front and back as If I bought the SPAX adjustables plus all the bushes springs and blocks I want, the overall cost would be more than the car!

thats just because the cars are so cheap though.

sort the suspension, get some nice wheels, an engine swap, some nice seats and nice tight steering wheel and you still wont be pushing rusty, non motd mk2 escort money.
