drivetrain difference.

Can anyone tell mewhat is the difference between 340drivetrain and the 360 one? Pics will help a lot...

All 300 series have gearbox+diff bolted together at the rear of the car to the body, with CV joints to the wheels and a solid de dion rear axle.
This was probably a consequence of the original 66 with CVT, which needs loads of space.
There are no universal joints

340:
Aluminium hollow tube driveshaft connects the gearbox at the back to the engine at the front. Gearbox+Diff is held in place by 2 crossmembers, Engine has 4 mountings.
Engine end connects to splined shaft with a clamp to clutch shaft (which can be unbolted from clutch housing, useful for clutch alignment). Both ends of drive shaft splined female couplers in rubber clamped by the aluminium tube.

360:
Solid steel narrow driveshaft, running inside a large torque tube which rigidly connects the engine and gearbox/Diff. Has extra bearings at 2 points.
360 has only 1 set of engine mounts and the load (weight and torque reaction) is shared with the single rear crossmember on the diff. For example when you disconnect the gearbox/diff from the rear crossmember the engine rotates down with it.
Engine end of drive shaft connects directly to clutch plate via splined shaft. Gearbox end connects via double ended clamp. Both ends of drive shaft splined male.

Otherise very similar, but 360 will have stronger bearings/halfshafts etc. All 360s have 5 speed box AFAIK.
In both cases its very important to use an accurate torque wrench to tighten the clamp bolts.

Sorry no pics handy.

OK, i see now. Thanks a lot.
So , is there any posibility to combine 1.7 clutch housing with ret of 360 drivetrain? without an adapter plate?

why would you want that?

only weakness in a 340 drivetrain compared to 360 are the rubber bushings in the propshaft, gearbox is internally exactly the same between 360 and 340 5 speed; differential ratio's are different though but those can be swapped quite easaly.

360 drivetrain's big weakness is the connector piece from gearbox to torque tube axle, these tend to break down just as easy as a 340 propshaft on full use does..

I've never had any problems with either driveshafts. I have tried and abused the car significantly in my younger days, as did a friend, but all cars had more or less standard power.

The only time we had a drive shaft problem with the coupling was when a mechanic removed the driveshaft for clutch or perhaps engine change, and didn't use a torques wrench to tighten it. Hammering the shaft to remove it can also loosen the rubber clamping, and care needs to be taken as they can be stubborn to remove.

I will be stressing my 360 more in the future with a 940 Turbo lump, so I will find out, and take ultra care of the coupling on reassembly.
