My steering wheel was shaking at speeds over 60 so had tracking and front wheels balanced but it didnt sort it. Garage had a look again on the ramps and on the drivers side the spring cup had been welded back and this was causing the problem. they wanted to steal £150 per side to supply and fit! how hard is it to replace? should i do both sides and does the strut come with a shock usually?
Thanks, Alex

Alex,

where are they going to get them from? they are nla from volvo and no one makes complete struts for 300's

How is it that welding to the spring cup is causing this vibration?

I once had similar bad vibration which wasn't cured by balancing. Turned out to be the the steering rack. New rack didn' t cure it straight away though. Cos the tyres had been wobbling, they had worn into a slight oval shapes :o (uneven tread depth around the circumference) and only severe re-balancing of the wheels after the new rack sorted it. This might not be your problem but maybe worth a look at the tyres to see whats happening.

Usual problem I find is bent wheels. The inside of the alloys is quite weak and easily damaged on a curb or something.

Any don't forget the back wheels, they can make the steering wheel shake too. Until you have thoroughly checked all the wheels for bent rims, distorted tyres and balance I wouldn't look at anything else.

Thanks for the help, Alex

i had a steering wobble that got bad!then after a rear wheel blow out we changed the passenger side rear blown wheel and drove off the wobble had totally gone!
an over inflated rear tyre(the 20 year old original)had ballooned the inner wall and was resposible for the wobble in the steering!worth a good look!

p.s where in sussex are you,im near gatwick

Most tyre garages will only balance the fronts because they believe it doesn't effect you when the back is out. However the backs DO effect you if they are way out. And with 300s you're going to have excess tyre wear on the back. Especially if you drive like me

Im near Haywards Heath. they are only budget tyres that came with it so will be wearing them out soon so i can get some decent ones!! the 1st garage was convinced the rears would have nothing to do with it even when i questioned them. Don't use SE tyres in Burgess Hill

Glad it turned out to be something simple.

I could not see how the strut could have caused it.
