Power steering

Post by MCHUDD » 29 Jan 2010 09:08 pm

Hi all you tech guys.
I was wondering if you can convert a 1983 360 GLS to power steering.I have got all the bits
from my 1989 GLT eg pump, resevour, pipe work and steering rack. However the bottom
crank shaft pully is different as it only has two grooves for belts. My 1989 three groove
pully will not bolt streight on.Is there any other one that will do.It would be interesting
to know what you think.
Cheers Mark. sm4

Didn't Corsas have elec PAS pump???????

Could be made to fit I would think.

What's stopping the 3 groove pulley fitting??????????

as far as i know as long as you have all the parts it should all fit in, as for the pully. i think why you haven't got a 3 slot pully on your 1983 360 is that, they never had power steering for these cars back then. should still bolt all on.
but am sure if am wrong someone else will have the answers.

cheers

Pulleys arn't a huge problem for a man with a lathe/mill. If it comes to it, find your local band of model engineers and take a drawing to one with an offer of beer, most can't turn down a metal working task

Does the steering column not also need changed. I also have an 89 power rack (kit) without the steering column. The power rack has a short splined connection, but the manual 87 360 uses a rack with a long T bar shaft as part of it, more shaft less column. Power rack has I think the knuckle joint nearer the rack. I also have a PS exhaust downpipe which I think you might need for the power rack with its different knuckle joint position. Of course the GLT may also have it.

What is different about the B19 to the B200 that means the pullies are different? I will have a spare B200 after I get this turbo in. You can have the crank timing gear if necessary, but I don't know if that is what the problem is. edit doh you also have this.

Sounds like an excuse for a visit and I have my beady eyes on a few parts, still a bit cold for knuckle damaging removals though.

+1 to that, the lower part of the steering column is different, and the downpipe on PAS cars has a different "kink" in it ...

Good luck with the conversion, keep us updated! It might be interesting for me too one day, for the DLS ...

I'd hazard a guess that a 3 groove pulley from a car with PAS would bolt on 'just like that' :D

Good thing with using the Volvo PAS kit though is that you'll get a slightly quicker rack, less turns from lock to lock

Hi mate.
Yes. Thay are a different design altogether.I wonder,is it possible to weld a similer
sized pully onto the two pully one to make it a three groove pully?
Thoughts welcome.I have a spare pump with the same size pully.

yeah i can remember something about B19 crankshaftpulleys have different mounting than B200, but not 100% sure!

welding another pulley onto it could make it a bit rough on balancing, a decent machine shop can manufacture a 3groove pulley with an hours work. it doesn't have to be CNC'd so that keeps costs low, you can even consider aluminium while you're at it
