Front Coil Springs...
Re: Front Coil Springs...
You have coil at angle, when you cut it with hacksaw or angle grinder, just cut it normally, then after that top of coil wire and point where you did the cut form a sharp edge, from the cutting point you could then take piece off from top of the wire, so that both ends of spring have somewhat flat contact. It is that when you put spring on table or any other level place, no matter which side down you put it should stand straight.
Otherwise end of wire would push into spring cup with quite strong force from single point, which will cause some damange.

Re: Front Coil Springs...
Ah ! ok it's clear now...but one question : do I have to cut the spring from the 2 sides ??? like the picture i uploaded on the previous post (red strips) ??? or the upper side is enough...

Upper side is enough, imo, so end that narrows just cut that off as otherwise it is not fitting to spring cup.dfeghali wrote:Ah ! ok it's clear now...but one question : do I have to cut the spring from the 2 sides ??? like the picture i uploaded on the previous post (red strips) ??? or the upper side is enough...

But I think it might make quite rough ride as it is so stiff spring, longer spring that has same spring rate as original ones might be best, but hard to obtain, it would be custom made.
Re: Front Coil Springs...
I am trying to find someone who does custom springs in here...
On the other side...I need an answer from Dai !!!
I believe he's a hard man to reach !

Dai is about to have/just has had (I'm not sure which!) his first child, so he could be even harder than normal! He's got a mobile number on the catalogue page which is the only way to normally get to him.
There must be someone near you who can do springs, we have a fair number of places over here.

Drop these guys an email, ask if they'll post international?

Re: Front Coil Springs...
Thanks Chris
Dai replied and said that it could be the struts...is there anything wrong with them ???
I e-mailed D Faulkner Springs and they replied :
David,
We would require a sample spring with fitted length and conformation if
there is a ratio in the suspension etc.
Price to Design and manufacture 2 off £80.00 to £100.00 each approx plus
Carriage and Vat if you are not VAT registered
It would be easier to phone and discuss further on 01243 543049
Best Regards
Peter Faulkner
By the way, I measured the free length of my old spring and it is about 330mm not 312mm like the specs I have found on the forum...do you have any new 360 GLT spring so we can compare...and see what's the right mesure ?
Cheers,
David

Re: Front Coil Springs...
New GLT springs were which I did measure, back then, Klien was brand of those, if your springs are longer, then those are not GLT springs of such type or Klien makes wrong kind of springs, but I'm doubtful about latter being possible.
Re: Front Coil Springs...
Since 1983 I have this GLT...the springs are originals...
I mesured them between the two ends...
It could be that the springs from Klien are lowering ones...
Thanks anyway

Re: Front Coil Springs...
Have you made sure both dampers are working correctly?
If one is sticking it could make one side higher or if one side is not damping that side would sit lower.
The other thing to check is to measure from the spring seat on the strut upto the top where teh damper nut is. the measurement should be the same both sides.

Re: Front Coil Springs...
These were not lowering springs, standard replacement springs for GLT & GLE, 20mm shorter than GLS/GL springs.dfeghali wrote:Since 1983 I have this GLT...the springs are originals...

There was spring dimensions mentioned in Volvo green books, which can be found in technical section, so one can see what Volvo think springs should be.
Anyway compared to old GL springs, there were hardly any change in ride height, probably old GL springs were sagged already quite a bit.
Re: Front Coil Springs...
In the v3m_technical_specifications.pdf for B19E (1983)
Free length : 326mm
Number of coils : 6.5
Wire diameter : 11.9mm
Coil diameter : 116mm
Cheers
David.

Re: Front Coil Springs...
Coil diameter is different there as well as is spring length, coil diameter and wire thickness affect to spring rate, spring length does not affect to that. I think that Klien has not used data from Volvo, who knows what they have had in mind.dfeghali wrote:In the v3m_technical_specifications.pdf for B19E (1983)

Original Volvo springs seem to be with higher spring rate than Klien ones, also originals seem to be longer, however as with Klien springs there was not much if any change to ride height, maybe modulus of rigidity should be different, ie. spring material can be different. Or then my GL springs were really badly sagged.
Then it is possible that they changed springs during the years as mine is 1988 GL, haven't browsed document myself yet.
Re: Front Coil Springs...
FINALLY the problem is solved !!!
I have found brand new 13mm diameter springs & approx same length as the GLT ones (I think from Mercedes Benz but the guy at the shop doesn't know initially for which model they apply )...The car sits now a little bit higher than standard but straight ( 40.5 cm from the center of the wheel to the wheel arch) !
Thanks a lot guys for your helpful tips
Cheers
