Re: whats the wiring modifications do i need
or should i go down the route of bike carbs as ive been offered a set jetted to a 1800! if i go that route can i keep the standard volvo loom!!!
Re: whats the wiring modifications do i need or go bike carbs
The problem most with bike carbs don't tackle is getting the ignition right for the 16V head. Most power is made from ignition, and just using a 1.7 Renix is a horrendous bodge that looses most of the power.
Wiring isn't bad, take the loom from the donor car and look through the wiring diagrams for that car, then just connect them into the stock 300's wiring (which whilst it has a "spark ecu", doesn't have anything you need to cut out at all)

Re: whats the wiring modifications do i need or go bike carbs
This is the exact process im going through at the moment on my 340:
Clio 1.8 16v block+head
R1 carbs and fuel pump, correctly jetted
4 branch exhaust manifold
I was planning on wiring up the 1.7 standard ignition module to the clio engine, what is it exactly the makes the unit no good chris?
Does it just have an incorrect ignition 'map', even with the vac advance hooked up?
Even if I manage to wire up the clio ecu to just run spark, surely that won't be expecting the changed/increased airflow that the carbs would provide?
cheers in advance

Yup, exactly right with the map mate, and I'd imagine you'd continue being right that the stock Renault stuff be out with the carbs on it. The Renault stuff is a lot easy to remap than the stock Volvo (I'm running a variation on the Williams map in mine), but tbh you'd want to be looking at a standalone programmable spark jobbie if you want to run carbs and actually make any more power than stock.

Re: whats the wiring modifications do i need or go bike carbs
im thinking of having a go as got sum bike carbs sat on my table
its a 1.4 carb am i right in thinking all i have to do is get the carbs jetted to a 1.4
and a manifold to get it running i know a standalone programmable spark jobbie lol
would make better use but im just a bit skint and what to get my hands dirty
am i right in think this thanks

The jetting isn't quite as simple as that though you'd get ballpark. Manifold is the easy bit, just make them bolt on, but sorting the jets so it runs well will take a fair bit of effort. Same with the ignition, you can get it running, but it'd be a huge shame if it runs only to make the same sort of power.
I'd bolt the carbs up, use the stock renix then wideband map from the initial jettings to get a bit more use out of them.
