Check Straps?
Check Straps?
Does anyone else's door creak/click like a bitch when opening? Pretty sure it's coming from the end of the check strap that's inside the door. I've tried lubing it up but it's not having it. Anyone know what I've gotta do to get this sorted?

Re: Check Straps?
Common problem, grease all moving parts. From what I remember the pin can make the noise too? My 340 was doing it last year, I just put loads of grease on the pin and the part inside the door by taking door card off to get at it. Thin oil's no good, it makes the grease run off. If it's worn, a replacement my be the answer.

Re: Check Straps?
Right ok, I'm pretty sure it's the strap as I can feel it vibrate with my finger on it. I'll just fill the door with grease and see how it goes then

Re: Check Straps?
I remember reading that you had to remove the check strap from the door to properly grease it, couldn't get to part of it from either side.
The check strap pins are available from volvo i think. Part no. 3282546

Re: Check Straps?
Well I've always greased them by opening the door the whole way, get a blob of grease on a long screwdriver and try and slide some grease along the shaft as far in as you can go (so many innuendos). Repeat this for the underside too and then open and close your door about 20 times. If it still squeeks, get more grease in there! Taking the door cards off isn't necessary but it can help.
Remember to use multipurpse grease, not copper grease. It's the first thing I do on every car I've ever owned.

Why not copper grease?Speedy88 wrote:Remember to use multipurpse grease, not copper grease.
I'm not doubting you in the slightest, just wondering why? I use copper grease for most things

Still waiting on a back from Dai, I'll chase him.
IMO copper grease will cause wear in moving parts.

Re: Check Straps?
Otherwise they'd use copper grease in everything due to its other properties
I mean granted putting it in your door joints isn't going to be too bad but over say 10 years it might well ruin a set of bearings. Just wouldn't recommend it
However, it could possibly be used on the external bits of the hinges for waterproofing I suppose. It's early, I'm just thinking out loud now. It's made me think though about where you could use copper grease to an advantage.

Re: Check Straps?
Aye come to think about it i wouldn't stick it in bearings etc. I only really use it for between wheels and hubs so they don't get stuck on (went through that on the peugeot) and for the backs of brake pads ... and hinges, I'll get some multi purpose stuff when i get new door pins and check straps.Speedy88 wrote:Otherwise they'd use copper grease in everything due to its other properties![]()

Re: Check Straps?
Hello, a bit slow on this one, replacing the pin will sort it. I posted something similar last year and found that the check-strap pin is no longer available from Volvo but it can be got new from.....
