fiting speedo cable from other car(other than volvo)

my speedo cable on my 340dl packed-up twice and i have nothing to replace it with,since i can't find one at the local shops,and i was wondering if speedo cable from other car producers will fit.
please help me!!!

I am not quite sure, but how about the speedo-cable from the VW Bus, 1979--- T3?I used to have one from 1980..and had to swap the cable..because it snapped.. Just a theory, perhaps someone else knows for sure?
