It is also reason why I'm very sceptic about any 'facts' that some motorsport 'gurus' lay off now and then, specially in national level of motorsports where people often don't have time to really test 'facts' they just go by general consensus or feeling, which is very understandable.
Only way to know if it helps for sure is to buy cheap digital thermometer, place readout into car and sensor near air intake, where we need cold air, test with bonnet shut and back lifted up and see the difference.
Of course best would be to measure temp from intake, but it is not very easy, heat soak and all to consider.
But of course knowing general temperature under bonnet does help.
When standing still there is of course different situation, hot air has no natural route out from engine bay, here I would imagine lies reason why it would work in drag racing, but to what extend I have no idea.

Agreed - and it's probably your HT leads which are at fault. People don't seem to change them, ever. I've had three 360GLT's, and they all came with what looked like the original HT leads. Also, clean up all the connecters to the coil, grease 'em up, and put it all back together again tight - then take your car to the beach for a day out.foggyjames wrote:whiskeyonesix - sounds like you need new ignition consumables.

Try running LPG on old leads and plugs - you'll get a nice bang under load

New HT leads, dizzy cap and plugs!
Mind you, it's the dry season over here, so the problem has now shifted from non-starting to running warm
gauge sits at about the 3/4 mark whilst driving (in 40degree heat mind you, otherwise its at exactly halfway)
It aint overheating, and shows no sign of doing so, but I think i'll be fitting an electric fan as soon as I can get to a scrappy...... And there's the air-con to get re-gassed etc.....

Does the radiator still have its fins in place? If it's the original, there's probably not a lot left of it by now...that's the usual cause of 360 hot running.

Rad probably needs a damn good flush. Put speedflush in your expansion tank, run it to temp, then take the bottom hose off your rad and watch all that nasty coolant run out. If the rad is oozing goo then it's easier to actually remove it from the car then run water through it until it comes back clear. You might need a new rad, but if it's not leaking and the fins are in good shape then the flush alone should fix it. Put your heater controls to max temp so you empty/flush the heater matrix too.
Sounds like previous owners have skimped with the servicing. Fortunately the head gaskets on these cars seem pretty resistant to running knackered coolant for years on end. While you're at it fit a new thermostat - they're cheap and it's easy to do. Put new hose clips on the connections to your rad, or substitute in jubilee clips. Then refill the whole system with the good clean coolant - pink or green it's your choice. The pink stuff runs a little hotter but has better performance.
You should do this whether you want to fit an electric fan or not - but this recipe will make your over-heating problems go away with the stock viscous fan.

The HGs survive well, but the heads like to corrode. I've become addicted to Volvo's own coolant. It's not cheap (but not that bad either), but it's lovely thick stuff...and just 'feels' right, somehow...
