The reason I suggested cd or the old dinosaur tape cases is because they are almost the correct thickness of plastic and normally most people have a old one knocking around. And also it has been mentioned the piece was missing, I did wonder how it could be missing in the first place as stalk would have always been loose without it. Easy enough to fab the piece to be like the original and act as a spacer (saves hunting for washers if you don't keep a contant stock of different sizes, my type of trick as I think I've got some but when I come to get them there is none of the ones I need left  ) also gives more area of streghth back to the part once glued (end to end/plastic to plastic) and when metal strip is added also provides more area for gluing the metal strip down (help stop movement forward and back if metal is a bit to flexible) if that is the way you want to do it.

Some plastics melt from chemical reaction which can cause heat from what glue or bonding agent is being used. You might not always feel heat from the item being glued as some plastic materials stand up to this chemical reaction but some melt and produce heat and if observed on some materials you will actually see it start to smoke, if really unlucky it will catch fire, had this while doing a few tests on various plastics for other items. I did make the mistake once of not testing a glue I was using on a plastic for an item I was making and burnt myself on it when moving the part just after it was finished being glued  , man some reactions can put out some heat! Was good for a laugh in the end

Shame the break is where it is. I know you want to try and fix it but if the worst comes to the worst at least Ride On has the offer of the part if you need it.

Your choice though.

thanks for the advice morgan105 and ride_on. i've managed to make a metal bracket/brace thing and seems to be holding. the reason the bit is missing is because when i got the car (about 2 months ago) someone had already atempted fixing it. it was workin as normal then went floppy, so i checked it and it already had a metal plate at the bottom and about 20 cable ties around the top.

thanks for the offer ride_on but mine seems pretty sturdy now so i will stick with it.

This is how mine was fixed by previous owner, plastic tends to crack, so some metal pieces where added, howver it becomes floppy at times and needs tightening of screws.
