Have you ever listened to most modern car radios. they are perfect. My dads benz sounds so clear with 8 speakers 2 tweetrs and 2 for bass, and i dont know how they do it without an external amp. And that isnt even premium sound.

Chris do you i have to cut the panels to get to the 4 screws?

Yeah, you do mate, if you don't want to cut, those panels are easy enough to get out to have a look at first, basically, theres a pop stud in the big recess behind the wheel arch, and two screws in the 1" holes above. then jiggle it a bit and the entire side comes out!

If you are keen, I have a set of those rear speakers, I was going to put them in mine, but not sure I will any more, I could check postage cost to Oz? I have no clue what figure it would be, but as usual, I'm sure payment including a snowflake aircon button would make me happy to send ;) Nah, whatever, I'll look into it if you are keen, but the sound won't be ace with the orig paper cones, and you will probably get better sound if you make your own mountings

As Chris said, you have to cut the panels. But take them out first! Might sound bloody obvious but I know someone who tried to do something similar with the panels still attached.....

Pull the panels out, use a template to cut the holes and make a spacer up, and then screw the spacer into the body and the speakers into that. It's not much work really. Maybe a couple hours all up.

You will also have to run cables through from the front which is a little fun, but easier than most cars. The rear seat is simple to pull out which helps.

Mine ended up like this Image

Dont worry about the rear speakers chris :D Is it possible to fit 6x9 because from the look of williams pic it seems that 6" is already big.

My system ought to sound pretty stinking awesome - it's worth at least twice what the car is as it stands, and I'm about to buy a Nakamichi head unit! :?

Background noise is indeed a factor, but the acoustic environment is so much better than the typical domestic space, so at low speeds it kinda balances out. Soundproofing in a 300 is definitely key to getting a decent SQ system. The rear (and front footwell) holes are for 4x6" speakers, which is a standard size.

Hopefully I'll have a revamped system to show off by the end of the summer, but as things stand, it's a bit all over the place, and with no bass!

cheers

I think that had more to do with the wannabe-ricer daughter in control of the volume ;)

Those Fusion units ought to be pretty awesome, and they're damn cheap for what they are!

I take that as a yes for the fusion speakers :)
The clarions i bought are still on the shoddy original head unit (if you can call it that) and when i turn up the base the speakers make a loud crackling sound. Do you think its the head unit at fault?

Please tune in later this week for more "English Modernisations with Mick"

As to the speaker thing, the crackling could be either to be honest, without hearing it. Normally you hear a speaker bottom out before crackling, unless the cone is blown. However, if you still are of the orig HU, I'd blame that, they arn't the best thing ever! I havn't looked back to see what size the clarions are, but I remember 4" for some reason, so don't expect miles of bass from them.

Make sure you haven't grounded a speaker line too...that can result in premature crackling.

Were those two posts relating to me? If so, Chris, I don't know what you mean by "hear a speaker bottom out before crackling". I don't think it was the speaker, as I tried tuning to another station to check tuning wasn't at fault once, and decided to set it as a preset. It normally bleeps quietly when doing this, but as the speakers were turned up full to get a normal sound level, the bleep was darn loud!

And James, I havn't touched the system, and it used to work fine, so I doubt that, unless there's corrosion or something? This wouldn't explain why it simply seems to take time to 'warm up' rather than permanently being bad.

Don't worry guys, I need to check the circumstances more, such as if only when engine cold etc and report back sometime. It's not a big issue. Thanks anyway :)
