Luckily I found this weak point before the rust ate through but Volvo should be wrapped on the knuckles for such poor design!

Is this the area numbered 65 in Tom`s diagram ?

chassis rust

lube point 65 does not completely rustproof. About 12 in and to the right of 62 be the nearest as there is an internal baffle which you can see marked with a thin line . Pete Farrel has some good pictures of the internal construction as he opened up the boot floor with an angle grinder !
There is an internal horizontal sandwich also that holds the diff crossmember bolts and traps condensation which cant get out!

Interesting to see how a volvo garage did the T chassis repair near the petrol tank. But at the risk of being pedantic what about the drain channels that were there originally? Though you could say it was the drain channels that caused the Rust! Pity volvo did not originally put a 1 inch drain hole there. I would pour lots of dinitol in there to stop moisture getting behind the repair!

I've taken pictures on a donor car, the second one from the inside is interesting: you can see that the channels are blocked...

hi Duvel, interesting internal photo there. From a structural point of view the rust bubbles in the crossmember overlap should not weaken the chassis join much as the spot welds are outside that area. But our mot regs are too vague and the test is a matter of the testers opinion. I still think a nice large drainage hole would be better than those tiny drain channels but you tell the mot tester that!

keep up the good work. Steve
