Rust proofing latest materials

Post by Ride_on » 27 Sep 2010 02:20 pm

I have recently been looking for a chassis black paint material for my 360 restoration. I had been using a spray tin of Eastwoods Extreme chassis black+primer which cures very hard, but is running out after doing rear axle+spring plates and hangers. In my searches I have found that I have been missing a key piece of new information about car painting.... 2 part Epoxy paint. It seems this is the new wonder paint that replaces chassis black paint, zinc layers, general primer, even underseal. Its also compatible with pretty much everything. I have been using Zinga on body repairs which not easy to over paint, and not as hard wearing as it claims.

I initially came across Rustbuster Epoxy mastic 121, which talks as if its the only epoxy paint in the world, but due to ridiculous delivery charges to N.Ireland I started looking else where. I also remembered seeing 'epoxy sealer' being used in American Hotrod (which is a great program to see real skills in use), but thought that it wouldn't work in the wet UK. Apparently most paint shops do it and its not like 2 pack, you can spray it at home with a normal good quality breathing filter, no isocyanate contents.

You can spray/brush over slightly rusty surfaces and it will prevent creeping (unlike normal underseal) so only the chipped off area will get rusty, but it is apparently very hard. It does need a good key on the surface so you need to sand with coarse paper, and of course you have to mix it with the associated pain of cleaning and pot life.

I plan to get some epoxy paint and try it out on the remaining suspension components (rear springs and all front suspension) and maybe apply it to the underside repairs. I will probably relegate Zinga to pre-welding patch enclosed sides.

If anyone has any experience of this it would interesting if they confirm or deny the above or add anything.

Strange most of the local suppliers are not recommending using epoxy primer as a stand alone, just due to the finish, and they don't stock black normally.

After further investigations its seems Epoxy primer is not the same as epoxy paint (or this mastic 121 stuff). Epoxy primer has to have a very good surface, no rust or chemically neutralised rust at microscopic level. The mastic 121 stuff builds up thicker and penetrates more and can be put over light rust, and is particularly good for under side initial layers or chassis black applications. All epoxies are non porous so can be left stand alone for long periods during restoration, they are also highly compatible with all coatings as far as I can see.

2K industrial epoxy primer with 2k polyurethane top coat works very well (especially with underbody conditions) if you can sandblast the metal or use a phosphoric acid treatment or similiar to clean out the metal parts. Or if the metal parts are completely new. :P

Epoxy is usable at home, but I believe 2K polyurethane is isocyanate based and requires industrial protection to you and the environment.
