A little help please 360 GLT electrics etc

Post by mattywatsit » 16 May 2011 09:08 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought myself a 1986 360 GLT, it is in good overall condition if im honest! but it's got a few niggles that are getting to me.

Firstly; the passenger's electric window has stopped working - when pressing the switch however it doesn't even try to work.. so i am guessing a loose connection somewhere? (i've not had time to look yet).

The central locking doesn't work fully either, the two front doors lock and one of the rears does also; but the other does not. Luckily it doesn't open usually so theres no need to lock it manually with the pin. Any ideas?

Another more pressing issue is the odometre however! It stopped working around 9000 miles ago the odometre and trip don't work however the rest of the dials including speedometre and rev counter are still working totally fine. They apparently broke when pressing the trip button... any ideas on how to fix that one? or will i need new clocks? If so can the mileage be put right?

One of the front fog light covers is broken also, would a replacement be available?

Front passengers mudflap is perished and is splitting/falling off - again are replacements still available?

Audio - the car has a non original Cassete player - i went to take it out today and found the multitude of wires... spaghetti junction doesn't even come into it. The wires are covered in insulating tape so i will have to sort the wires out to put another headunit in. Does anyone have a wiring chart to show which wires are what in the car? I have a new Pioneer head unit to go in and it has the usual multiplug connection, so im guessing i will have to buy the other male/female (i've not looked) plug and sort the car wires out into it. Another ting is making the ariel connection right to fit the new headunit....

There are other cosmetics to be fixed, but i will do those in time :) I am loving Volvo ownership though the 2.0i is a gorgeous engine... still getting used the lack of power steering but i will get there.

Thanks again. :360:

window switches don't tend to last well and water can affect the motor/gearbox. Try swapping the switch connections over to the driver side switch to eliminate the switch, some 740/940 ones fit. If still not working then motor/gearbox needs cleaning/freeing up, can be disassembled or you can buy a new one for about £100. Also could be frayed wiring at the door hinge, but not common, especially passenger side.

Get a multimeter to test the switches or stick some power over the motor see if it works that should show your problem
I've got some window switches spare if you want em mate

My mudflaps are the same, think they have a metal rim inside that rusts away

look for 360s being broken for fogs, probably be the whole unit. I have extra (yellow) covers i made for mine that just slot in between the valance and the fog body at the front, might be an idea if you can't get spares

I know all the connections and actually made up a ISO (modern stereo connector) to volvo connector adaptor for using a CD player, might have a spare ISO connector somewhere too

Am happy to come give you a hand if you want it any time

Cheers for that! Good idea about switching the connections over; i will give that a go tomorrow! Failing that i will strip the door card off and have a look at the wiring and the motor itself and strip it down if needs be. Thanks again for your help :)

Hi Matt,

Debating about a way to fix the mudflap or looking at replacing the two fronts with universal ones :)

I'm guessing 360's being broken is quite a rare occoasion :/ fog bulb still works and has been broken for 4 years now - it just looks untidy. Do tell me more about your covers though?

As for the stereo; i sat tonight and figured out which connections were what and made a new patch/adapter lead using a little soldering - CD player now works a treat :) and looks 10x better than the aftermarket Panasonic tape player it replaced.

Feel free to pop over and see the car whenever you want :) Would be good to see another 360! :D

Cheers for all of your help.

Matt.

I put the fog covers on just to turn em yellow, continental style :) but they do add an extra layer of protection and probably help aerodynamics as they sit nearly flush with the valance cut-outs. I bourght a sheet of 3mm perspex then just cut it to slightly larger than the cut outs in the valance, tried them, filed a bit off until I could slot them in but so they sat tight.

Will deffo come see the motor sometime, mk2 or 3?

Really interested in making some yellow fog covers as they look good, only if you don't mind me copying though :)

It's a silver early mk3.

Ill show you them, its hard to explain exactly. Dont mind you copying at all. Might have a bit of perspex left too. Was only about 4 quid posted from ebay for an A4 sized piece.

Silver is nice, better than my blue.

Looks good mate, the lenses look better lining up with the valance. I may have located a pair of brand new fog lights, so I may fit those and then get some tinted perspex to fit afterwards.

Cheers for the photo.

I tried swapping the switch connections over this evening but no joy! Guessing the motor is knackered... can a universal electric window motor be used to replace it does anyone know?

Cheers,
Matt.
