Heated Seats

Post by Jaspersilus » 06 Jun 2011 10:37 pm

Hi Chaps,
do the heated seats work on a thermostat, ie when I tested them it was 23 c outside, and I felt no heat from the seats, does the outside temp infuence whether they work or not, or as a suspect are they just shagged??????????????

I think they do, 14 degrees C. springs to mind.

More likely than not they will be shagged though lol. test for voltage at the switch or resistance across the connector that comes out the seat if you get 12V at the switch and some value other than 0 at the connector it should work

Hi Nimminz
I am getting full 12v at switch, when I first tested there was no power to the switch but then had a look under the seats and all the connectors were disconnected, connected them back up and the power was back to the switches!
Also the heat pads on the seat are bunched up towards the back of the seat, is there any way to flatten them back out?

You have found the classic heated seat problem - they bunch up and overheat burning out either the pad wiring or the thermostat (small silver "pot" ) in the seat pad.

The "mkII" were especially prone but they had drivers seat heating only and no switches.

If you have the yellow plastic mesh type it is possible to spread the pads out (secure with cable ties) and, if the problem is in the thermostat, remove it and join the wiring.
You can then control via the switch. BUT they will get very hot indeed with no thermostat and I have seen burnt foam resulting so CAUTION.

The thermostat is made by "Otter" I seem to remember.

Thinking about it, it can't be hard to rescue a thermostat off a 940 in a scrappy, im sure the ampages will be very similar.

Just had mine out today, wiring in the pad is broke and the wires to the thermostat have dissapeared from the spades, now i'd just reconnect it, spread it back out and Join the wiring but most of my yellow mesh is melted :(

Having a proper stat (maybe to allow it to get a tad hotter before turning off) would be good though
