rev counter?
rev counter?
ok ive managed to find myself a rev counter to replace the clock on my 340,
can anybody tell me how to fit these?
are they plug and play or do i have to mess about with wires?

Nope, plug n play. You'll have to run a wire to an output on the coil/renix.

yeah ive done a little research,, aparently its the grey wire coming from the 3 wire plug on the renix.......a little confused tho..... ive read that on some clock fitted models the grey wire simply ends (dosent connect to anything) and you have to run a wire from that one to the 5th pin on the multiplug behind the instrument pannel.....
what gets me is,,, why arent thete already connected? if they fitted this wire during production why not just connect it up?
also when i look behind my instrument pannel on the multiplug theres a black wire already fitted into the 5th pin? whats that for?
have tried looking at the wiring diagram but am f***ed if i can get my head round it

just had a look... thanks, that confirms what i thought about having to bridge the gap between where the grey wire ends and the 5th pin...
did you ever find out what the black wire is for? (thats already connected to the 5th pin)

the plot thickens.... i started following the grey wire from the renix along the loom.... it dosent seem to come to an end as i was expecting... it goes all the way to the fuse box and appears to be hooked up to one of the connector plugs into the fuse box.... does this mean that its likley that its allready set up for a rev counter?

pin no5 on the left hand connector to the instrument cluster - just tap into that, it's all I did - works a treat.
That wire would go to the rev counter if it was in the cluster.

it should be plug and play, I've never seen a 300 dash that wasn't pre wired for a tacho.

pull pin 5 out of the dash connector - splice your signal wire from the tacho into that - replace the pin into the connector. add power to the tacho from the Accessories circuit and add illumination if required from the instrument cluster lighting circuit so the dimming function works.

if the black wire at pin 5 on the cluster doesn't end after aprox 15cm, then it's fully prewired!!

ok thanks.... anyone know why they sometimes end after a short distance and sometimes they are fully pre wired on 340s factory fitted with clocks?
i know it dosent realy matter.... just curious

because there are different looms for both engine bay and dash depending on the option level.
engine bay loom had options like headlight wipers, outdoor temperature sender, front foglights, fuel-cutoff etc. depending on the spec of the basic, DL or GL 300 they chose a specific loom to fit wich has all wanted options in it
L or Winner versions were litteraly stripped of options so even the loom had less wires. GL models usually have a complete loom, and after 1987 the basic loom was allways prewired with all basic options, excluding electric mirrors, front fog lights etc. as these were still seperate looms that were integrated in the dash during assembly.

hmmm. so would you say that its likly that mine has the complete (not stripped) loom? ....

I'd say it's likely that at least the rev counter is pre-wired in your car.
