In front of the passenger side strut, between that and the battery. Its the renix unit and has the coil attached.

Cheers, this?

doesnt look the same as the ebay pictures :/

The broke down this morning, it cut out at the lights and wouldn't restart, it then started after about 5-10 mins. It cut out yesterday aswell but by the time I pulled over It would restart with some throttle. It has been running alittle lumpy seemly randomly. Any ideas what it could be?

It was suggested it was the ignition module but I know have alittle more time to find the fault

thank you!

those on the ebay link look similar to the connector on the air flow meter.

How new are the plugs (and are they gapped correctly)?
How new are the leads?
How new is the coil?
How new is the rotor arm?
Check the distributor cap
Plus clean the MAF

I had problems with mine misfire-ing and running rich and it turned out to be a combination of all the above. Mainly the rotor arm. If it restarted after a bit i'd suggest checking them first.

oh, i've just the parts now. I do think its them though because it seems to be something heating up.

dizzy, plugs and leads look farely new (i know its not alot to go on) but the coil looks bad so i've odered a new coil and module. Ill check the rotor arm, plugs etc when tommrow as well then :)

aye, coil helped a lot on mine. rotor arm was the last thing i changed and made the most difference. I've renewed the lot and have a 'high performance' coil lead to pick up in the next few days.

It's never going to be bad renewing parts.

The renix will be fine, in 10+ years of mucking around with countless 300's I've never seen one fail. The coil bolts on the front of it, those connections can corrode. Other things I'd be suspect of would be the crank sensor, but if it's not been serviced Nimminz is right and the dizzy cap and arm will be loosing you MPG at pace.

I take it you've checked for spark?

Its an intermitant fault, so I can only check more things when it breaks. it suggests to me that its something getting hot and stops working. My lgoic is that the ignition module is most likly to be effected by heat. but why is is getting hot, either coil is getting to hot or the acctually module is

Chris, why is your money on it?

Ignition module was suggested by my preivous boss too. My plan is on sunday to try and run it till it cuts out, then test the CPS

Would a dodgy CPS stop it from starting though? I would expect it to start, then misfire alittle or cut out.

Most garages love blaming renix units, on most 80s cars electronic ignition was unreliable but the renix (as much as its French and this pains me to say ;) ) is a very well engineered bit of kit, I've never seen a unit fail. I had a box of "non working" ones from a garage once, each was fine.

Cps failing with heat is something I'be seen time and again, as well as with water. They run fine cold, but then when you either get the engine hot from heavy use (mine was on track and rallying) or through fords she'd either run lumpy or cut out completely. When they cut completely you have no spark so easier to check but often they'd cool down and by the time you had the spanners out it was back to running again!
