Nearly all welded, just a status report.
Nearly all welded, just a status report.
I keep getting feelings of enormous success, this car will be the dogs bollocks when its done.
Just a thought, has anyone painted the standard bumpers on their 300? mine are a little scarred and I was thinking a bit of filler and a coat of bumper paint/etc would look much nicer, anyone have a pic of one with it done?

Nice one! Feels much better than paying someone else to do the work!
The bumpers, are they the all-black mk3 ones? i think after a sand and filler you should be able to use any rattle can paint. Why not colour code them at the same time?
I've been thinking of doing the black inserts of my colour coded bumpers gloss black

Damn well finished welding!! (total cost - £60~)
There are only 3 small dents left, (I run out of filler) - and a general sand down and renewal of tired paint is about 25% done with a colour match that blends seamlessly.
Going in for MOT next few days as soon as I get £25
It is cheap but it dont half smart.. halfway through a weld bead and a blob of steel dropped into the palm of my hand that was holding the electrode.. I let it sizzle instead of ruin my bead.... also got a weld splatter IN my earhole.
It's amazing how much you can ignore the pain when your car depends on it..

Nearly collapsed through exhaustion.
- I've hit the wall.
If karate kid is anything to go by I should be able to kick ass like bruce lee now
Power tools are for wimps. (at no time during this "restoration" have I employed an electric motor)

Re: Nearly all welded, just a status report.
MOT booked for dinnertime tomorrow.. just need to temp-bodge the expansion tank in place till I find some bolt cutters.
I did remake the battery tray, fair section of the OS chassis rail and 4 sections of outer sill, 1 section of inner sill, bottom of A pillar, some floor.. straightened the wing, took out a dozen or so small dents, applied paint till the coat was unbroken.
Some filler, sandpaper, paint, T-cut and a rocky balboa breakfast (half a dozen raw eggs) is in order to finish what I started.. it's hard work.

Re: Nearly all welded, just a status report.
I've managed a few sections with t-cut, its coming up gorgeous - even with cutting paste its slow going.. I'm going to have to get some abrasive cloth from hellfraud-independentkiller-s (booooo), its too damn hard to t-cut the volvo paint, even with cutting paste added.
need to sort a few holes in the doors still.. waiting for leading eqipment (lead-blowtorch-flux)
I'm taking my first actual break excluding eating and sleeping - its ready for the "before" pics now so I'll put them up sometime today.
hellfrau... - they have killed EVERY independent in bolton. I have no choice. - morgan bros is up for auction and now closed. - looks like we're ;vulgar - doomed

Re: Nearly all welded, just a status report.
Look forward to seeing this mate. Sounds like you're doing a good job.
Why T-Cut though?! Surely you should mop it with something decent. Seems a shame to use that crap.

something decent? what should I be using?, I've only ever used T-cut - I need a few steps upward, and maybe downward of that level of abrasiveness.
Re: Nearly all welded, just a status report.
Use the stuff the pros use. I think its called something like G3? Much more abrasive polish than T-Cut, but designed for cutting back paint properly prior to re-applying a top coat or lacquer. The company makes a whole range of polishing and finishing products for the trade, and they also do a finishing product as well. I think its called something like G10. A proper paint shop should either have it or know where to get it.
