Volvo 345 1.4 Battery

Post by Bocephus » 27 Sep 2011 09:44 pm

Hi have a Volvo 345 1.4 1982, recently the battery went flat...so considered whether to get another battery.
A mate who had a later 440 1.8 gave me a near new battery he kept when the car went.
Unfortunately there is no marking to tell me the AH of it.
It is around an inch or so longer, problem was when put it on my 345 the immobiliser light would not go out.
Therefore unable to start the car, any ideas why?

Hi mate.
If its out of a 440, its probably a better battery.
Cheers Mark. sm4

Your immobiliser is probably non-volvo, so we are not the experts but my 940 alarm does sometimes not boot properly if you do not put the battery terminal on positively, ie if you jiggle it about when you are putting it on the sparks and irratic voltage can upset the alarm and it won't respond to the key fob.

The Ah rating is pretty irrelevent for non-working, any 12V lead acid battery should work, bigger batteries are better if your engine is a bit sick and doesn't start well in the cold.

Many thanks for the response.
Only got the car in May of this year, didn't think there should be any reason why the larger battery shouldn't be ok.
May have to think about disconnecting the immobiliser, if it won't go out.
The battery itself is much better than the one on the car when got, it's maintenance free for a start.
Will be seeing a mate this Saturday who's more knowledgeable than me, so hopefully will sort it. 340pw

Just try a reboot!.. ie disconnect and reconnect the battery.

Well when went to start the motor this morning, the old battery was flat again.
That was despite starting it yesterday afternoon, and running it for a spell.
Tried to jump from the larger one, which had put in the boot...no good.
Had got a new Ring Workshop Charge 20, which allows me to trickle, fast or boost start the battery.
So got it going as was going to Harlow for the day.
When got there, took the old battery off, replaced with the one was given from a 440 and this time all was OK.
So hopefully all sorted now, everything seems to be running fine.
