340/343 layout?
340/343 layout?
Hey guys,
I'm after a roll cage for my Volvo 340, but the one listed on the Safety Devices website is for a 343. Are the two cars identical inside, both in terms of dimensions and trim?
Thanks
Matt

Re: 340/343 layout?
I'm looking for one also mate, but at £700 for the Safety Devices 6 pt bolt in with harness bars it's a bit steep imo.
As for the dimensions, the only issue I can see is with the dash. The 343 had a smaller dash, so if this Polish made cage is designed to clear that dash then it won't in a car with the later dash.
Personally, the closer to the pillars the better, but that depends if you're happy to hack up your dash?

Re: 340/343 layout?
The other day i done a Google search on this subject and it came up with some old links from here.
Seen this place? http://www.pedersens-racing.no/bil/bur/ Dunno how they feel about shipping to UK, but at £4-£500 for a decent 6 pointer it looks viable. Shame it needs welded though. I might order the main hoop, front legs, top bar and make the rest.

Or maybe not at £400 lol, More cost effective it seems is this full 6 pointer;

3,440.00 NOK Norwegian Krone = 377.85 GBP Pound Sterling. Plus shipping. I reckon I may go for one of these if they will send it and don't want a fortune. Ideal opportunity to customise it a bit when welding it together/in too.
Would you be up for sharing shipping if you are interested in this type? Maybe we could get a group buy going and possibly get a little discount.

Thanks for the info L14MNP, I'm more than willing to hack up the dash, as long as it does it job when the time comes!L14MNP wrote:Personally, the closer to the pillars the better, but that depends if you're happy to hack up your dash?
I think, to be honest, I'll go with the SD one. I know it's more money and made in Poland and all that, but if I'm spending that kind of money, I really want something I can stage rally in. The SD one is the only one that is FIA/MSA homologated I think, so I guess that is the only choice in that respect.L14MNP wrote:Would you be up for sharing shipping if you are interested in this type? Let me know how you go on anyway. I'm speaking to an engineer at Safety Devices tomorrow morning about the potential size differences, so I shall let you know of the outcome of that conversation.
Thanks

Pretty sure unless you're doing international rallies your cage only has to comply with MSA specs re materials/thickness etc.

My SD one (infact... both the SD ones I've had) the rear hoop (blue green and yellow) are welded. Red and purple are kinda flange bolted from memory.L14MNP wrote:

Re: 340/343 layout?
Fair enough broady81, keep us in the loop mate.
I'm not too pleased about paying £700 for an SD cage. I would want a multi-point weld in triangluated to the strut towers for that lol.
Just FYI, the Pedersen cages claim to be FIA spec too.
Chris, I imagine that's how any of the bolt in cages would be, well maybe except for the front legs - top bar arrangement? The Norweigan one is designed to be a weld in from what I can gather. I'd prefer something like that I reckon.

Re: 340/343 layout?
The first paragraph at the top of the Pederson's Racing page is this:
So it might be viable? Our popular selvbyggerbur stock a variety of car models. All tubes meet FIA requirements for dimensions, strength and weldability. The main canopy is 45 x 2.5 and the rest are 40 x 2 The tubes are supplied pre-bent to different car models, but all lengths must be adjusted and welded.

Re: 340/343 layout?
^ That's my thinking. Although I assume if you want to use one for competition reasons then it will need to be welded by someone certified?

My dad isnt licensed or anything, but hes done all the welding on it, using all the correct FIA size tubing etc - when you go to scrutineering they'll check the cage, and when they see its a homemade/welded cage they'l have an extra good look

Re: 340/343 layout?
That is an impressive looking spaceframe mate! What a cool project.
What engine is going in, bike?
Good info on the welding, cheers. I would have a bash myself if I could get my hands on a bender like you have been using! Do you own it?

We bent the majority of the bars using a normal pipe bender like this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clarke-12-Ton ... 500wt_1287
First thing we attempted was the main hoop, it went fine, but one of the bends flattened ever so slightly (we figured out why), and my dad being the perfectionist that he is, didn't like it, so had one bent by a company. The original one was perfectly fine. So apart from the main hoop, all the other bends in the car were done by us using that style pipe bender. So really you could make your own 6 point if you wanted to

That 131 looks stunning! Build thread anywhere?

Re: 340/343 layout?
I just got a reply back from Pedersens saying this:
I've sent an e-mail to finess asking the price for a 6 point shipped to the Uk, so we shall see
For the 131, if you go to http://www.youtube.co.uk/Evotoad there's build videos of the car on there
While were waiting for the engine back were building this one

This ones got a grale engine too, but a standard turbo, ported head a little bit, forged pistons, safety devices cage tied to the front struts, 5 linked rear end, LSD, all the stuff from the big one when it used to be raced
There is a build thread for the spaceframed one here but im not sure if you can see it?

Hi,
Sorry, but we do not ship abroad. Try http://www.finess.se in Sweden (the producer of the rollcage).

Shame Pedersen's don't ship, nice one on getting the manufacturers details though. I have been meaning to send an email. You saved me a job!
I'm off to have a look at your 131 build now.
