1.7 Alternator and belt

Post by Attack2001 » 08 Jan 2012 01:47 am

Hi all, looking at getting my 1700 together, but i didnt get an alternator with it or belt. So first things, i bought a project 300 that came with a megane engine and alternator. Am i able to use the Megane alternator instead of have to buy another 1700 one?

Also, need to buy a belt. Looking at this one it lists pretty much all the models, will it fit the 1700?

Thanks for any help :D Thomas............

The alternator is probably the same (assuming the Megane engine is an F7R?), however, the later engines use a six rib PK6 belt where the 1.7 only uses 5. I think a PK5 belt will run on a PK6 pulley, but it may be liable to jump off as one edge will be running against another belt groove rather than the end lip of the pulley. If you can't use the Renault pulley then you'll need to get a 1.7 alternator pulley.

Nope. That is a V belt like the one used by the 1.4, you need a ribbed belt like this.

Thanks for the reply :) Aha so that belts useless

The engine is an F7R yes :) And i did notice the difference in pulleys, do you think it would be as simple as just changing the pulleys over to make it all fit? I suppose theres only one way to find out haha

Thanks, Thomas...............

Sure thing the shafts are definitely the same. I can't remember if there are any shims/spacers behind the pulley, if there are you'll need to fit these as well.

I ran the F7R alternator with a 6 rib pulley until a ground fault on the block killed it. Crank and idler are 6 rib too. Then ran a 5 rib on a 1.7 alternator for a while, with the belt of something like a Mk1 MR2. Rock Auto and changing URL's mm by mm until one exists was how I did it.

Difference between the two is current capability. F7R can output silly figures compared to the 1.7, but unless you've fitted electric weasel trimmers or something 300's don't need the juice.

I've not had an issue with my spots, but I always scrappy for the good ones rather than the bad, alternators cost the same no mattter what they come from :D
