electric fan question

Post by valdemaras » 26 Jan 2012 12:30 pm

Hi there,
i`m planing to put an electric fan to my '86 volvo 360,
so far I've find electrical diagrams and so on,
and there one more question left: what kind of intervals i should put the thermal switch?
they varies from switching on at 75°C to 115°C and switchig off from 70°C to 110°C
so what kind of interval to use? I'm thinking about : on 92°C - off 82°C

Thanks

Well from memory, the electric fan switch on a 340 is on at 87.5C off at 82.5C.

there is at the shop a switch witch switches on at 87C and switches off at 82C, so maybe this is the one :)

Sounds like the one. I have the thread sizes somewhere too.

You're luck is in. I managed to find my notes on the HDD quick enough.

The DAF 66 has a engine driven fan. I was looking at going electric, although there was no provision on the radiator for the fitment of a thermoswitch. So when I had the radiator re-cored, I asked if they could also solder in a brass boss for the switch. I also bought a plug bolt for it, until such time as I got round to fitting the electrics. Anyway due to theft/write-off, I never got round to finishing what I started. However, I did keep the notes.

Boss dimensions:

Yes. You could of course put it somewhere else in the water circuit, but then the local temperature at that new point might be different.

Item 10, thermoswitch, bolts into side of radiator near bottom hose.

so if i will put thermal switch in upper house, because it would be easier and i could do that myself, would be no need to take the radiator to the specialist, so i'm guessing i will need different temperature thermal switch, because coolant temperature would be higher in upper house then down in radiator's bottom ?

Probably, but you'd have to do the maths or measurement yourself. I've no idea how hot it'd be up there.

There's probably a proper engineering answer for putting it down the bottom though. Something like if the radiator cools the water sufficiently at speed then it doesn't matter if it is really hot at the top and the fan doesn't need to be on.

If this is a 360 though, is there not already a threaded hole in the radiator for a different temperature sensor? Just add the fan switch on a T-piece?

well i`ll have to check that out, and if there is a thread in radiator then all my problems are solved sm40

If not, you could get / make one of these adaptors? Fits in the hose (like above)

Didn't find any thread in radiator, so i'll keep to my first option, making and adaptor for the hose
Only one thing left - what kind of thermo-switch to use?
So i thought maybe put the adaptor in bottom hose so i can use the switch same specification as in 340 which is on at 87.5C off at 82.5C.

Yes, I'd go for the bottom hose.
