Wobbly speedo up to about 40mph
Wobbly speedo up to about 40mph
Recently bought a volvo 340 and its mint. Only thing is the speedo goes crazy at low speeds, as soon as you get above 40mph it sorts its self out. Any ideas?
Re: Wobbly speedo up to about 40mph
Speedo cable frayed or the little piece that drives it in the front left hand bearing cover. I had one that had worn a nearly circular hole in the cup, I think caused by the lack of the circlip which seems unimportant as it works without it. Or a broken speedo, dashes seem fairly numerous or you could borrow one.

Get the cable out and lube it up with GT85 (this stuff is ideal and has properties that will last longer than WD40 in this application). Should be a bit better for a while.

Whilst it might be better than WD40, isn't graphite powder the correct lubricant in this application? Maplins used to sell it, about 3 quidSpeedy88 wrote:(this stuff is ideal and has properties that will last longer than WD40 in this application).

I thought greasing a speedo cable sparingly and wiping the last 6" off the speedo-head end of the cable was the format, so it would wind its way into the speedo head and kill it.Chris_C wrote:Whilst it might be better than WD40, isn't graphite powder the correct lubricant in this application? Something with PTFE in it, as another idea. Can't remember if GT85 does. Smells nice though.
