Revertse lights not staying on!!!!!
Hi guys, a little painful problem. My reverse lights are not staying on when the car is put in reverse. Any ideas. This is for a 360 GLT B200E.
I'm assuming that there are a number of reasons for this
1 - Reverse switch connected to gear lever (but if this wasn't working, then they would come on at all)
2 - Earthing is poor.
3 - Wrong leads connected to bulbs
Can anyone send me a diagram of what colours/ or a photo of how the light clusters should be connected. I think I've got it correct because the break, fog and rear lights and well as indicator work fine!!!!
This is giving me the s***s

Yeah mine does that too, for some reason the switch doesn't activate in the first 1/2 of the switch swing. To find out if it's your switch, take off the gearstick surround and operate the switch manually.

Should the bulb have a two leads or one lead only ( i.e should the single bulb have two leads running to it or just one)? C'mon England don't let me down

Am i assuming that anything on a left handed (as in the booklet above) car will be translated to the right hand car?

yep, the bracket that holds it will need moving slightly further towards the lever it's self. Think when its in 1st gear there's meant to be 0.5mm clearance. Mine's a pain as my linkages snapped and the whole lot moves and that makes it nearly impossible to get it right.
If you hold the lever to the left when in reverse i take it the lights are on but if you let go they go off? Then follow procedure above

Modified the bracket and got a used switch from another 360 GLT. Worked a treat

I've not had this problem in my 86 luckily but did only just adjust the bracket in the 87 while you were all sleeping probably. works fine now.

Hello, you can bulk up the lever on the reverse light switch with a bit of araldite which works for a few weeks or months before the glue falls off. The problem with adjusting the position of the switch is that it can make getting second gear even harder than it probably is already and there may be so much slack in the system, that it won't help anyway. The work-around I use is to keep the gear-lever pushed over to the left when in reverse and the light stays on fine, although power-steering helps for this!

Its caused by the gearbox linkages and shift forks getting worn and play in the lever, you shovel it left to get reverse so the lights come on fine, then the stick wobbles right so the lights go off again, adjusting the switch position will probably prevent you getting 1st and 2nd gear properly.
Its a real problem because getting new bushes for the linkages is virtually impossible unless you know someone who can custom make them, and it might not cure the problem anyway, if the shift fork bearings or linkages in the gearbox itself are worn.
A bodge cure is as other people have said, to build up the switch part by gluing something extra on top so that the switch is kept activated.
