Yes, as the sleeve should be pushed in by the cylinder of the strut enough to break the contact against the piston.

If it's not going all the way in, is it the correct way round? (says he stabbing in the dark, as I've not one in front of me)

Afternoon all,

Can you "manually" operate the light by pressing in the sleeve (assuming the "switch" is earthed).

If "manual" works it suggests the sleeve is incorrect length - or the gas spring rod/body is not the same size
as OE.

With the switch fitted to the end of the rod, close the hatch, and from inside the car try to see if the sleeve
is indeed being pushed into the switch. If not extend length of sleeve.

The very early cars (76/77 and maybe later) had a switch in the centre top boot lip edge by the roof, operated by the boot lid itself closing. It used to be less than 100% effiecient and caused water leaks as it deformed the rubber rainwater seal....just in case anyone with one is reading this! I'm sure volvomania will be able to let us know which model years it was used up to!

1978 MY has a switch on the left strut (standing at the rear looking forwards) looking 82MY > it's deffo on the right one.

Success at last. Fixed by putting a couple of washers on the strut, therefore pushing the plastic bit further in.... light is fixed
