Hello, it should just push back in although I had one that refused to go in at all (nightmare). The end of the inner cable has a square cross-section should pop into a little bobbin which is held in the grease-cap by a circlip-type of thing. It all fiddles back together fairly quickly if the outer cable will go through the hub. Best of luck.

the square cross-section should pop into a little bobbin - I thought the thread would be screwed in to the little bobbin and hence when the grease cap moved the cable spun around hence should work. Are you telling me I'm doing this wrong?

Hello, I don't think anything has to be screwed in as such. If you look at the grease-cap, the square end of the bobbin fits into a square hole in the grease-cap and is held there by the clip. The other end of the bobbin sits right inside the hub and has a square hole in it. The squared-off end of the speedo cable just fits in to this hole and is driven by the bobbin. If your set-up does not look like this, perhaps something is broken - this is a common point where they break. I hope this helps.
