Winter Storage!

Post by Jaspersilus » 16 Sep 2012 11:21 am

Hi Chaps,
I have decided that I CANNOT sell my 360 GLT, so Im going to wrap it up for winter and make a start next spring, hopefully with healthier funds, also Im going to get someone in to do the necessary welding ( there is quite a lot , none on chassis, all on body ) if anybody in south yorkshire area thinks they can do a decent job for a reasonable price let me know!

So to my main question, I dont want the rust to get much worse over winter, it will be covered but stored outside on my drive, what can I put on the rust areas ( inc holes ) that will limit the amount of extra rust the damp conditions cause!

Cheers Jason

By 'put on' do you mean paint or so cover holes to stop water getting in?

If you've got a decent waterproof cover then I'd just use that as it will stop all the water getting in. Halfords were selling good proper waterproof covers for about £55ish. Avoid £20 'water resistant' covers which are only any good as a garage dust cover. Any atmospheric damp will get in whatever you do as you can't easily treat the inside.

If you intend cutting out rust and welding I wouldn't paint anything yet, it will make it harder to weld.

Hi,
thanks for the replies, Ill have a look at KURUST, but I will be having the rust cut out and welded next spring as Helldriver pointed out and dont want to cause problems!

As for the welding, I need someone who can do a good job, is used to working on 300s, isnt too far away, sound like anyone you know Helldriver

As far as the cover is concerned was thinking a nice cheap soft car cover, then a tarp over the top, whatdya think!

Cheers Jason

I managed ok on the 340 but hope to better on the Mk1. Practice does improve the quality of welding, I know I can/should do better than I have done already. Wouldn't want to 'practice' on someone elses car :P. Time is my biggest problem. I've had the Mk1 for over 2 years now and not actually touched it yet! Although I have been dismantling a lot of bits of other cars ready to go on. I've done manily small patches so far on the 340 with minimal fabrication (mainly small flat/ slightly curved bits). I could certainly call in sometime to see what needs doing to help you decide how to tackle it but there's no chance I can actually do the work, unless it's very minor (which usually it's not :( ). I really must get the Mk1 started properly this autumn and get that rusting hulk of Foggys old 360 spares car off the drive.

Covers: That sounds fine, as long as no water gets through. Just remember that a plastic tarp will not let water out either so will condense on the inside in certain weather, keeping it humid underneath. Best to uncover occasionally during dry weather and run the car for a bit and use all the electrics. If possible move it back on forward and try the brakes, keep it all moving. DON'T leave the handbrake on. Make sure the antifreeze is strong as the engine will get very cold if totally unused for weeks during freezing weather. Make sure mice don't get chance to get in..no food left in the car, crisps, chocolate etc. Check for nests/droppings every few weeks.

All the above from bitter experience, some of it mine!

Make sure you have a cover that will hold up in the wind.

Good point, mine blew off yesterday as I'd not tied it under the car (a pain to do if you use the car often). Lucky it didn't go far! Make sure it doesn't flap around. A soft cover is ok but a flapping tarp will soon damage a soft cover and may wear through/damage paintwork as well.
