340 Speedo Cable

Post by johnefrench » 04 Nov 2012 01:16 am

Hi,
The speedo on my 1986 340 is getting a tad shaky, tho it's OK on the higher speeds but the mile counter and trip mile have also stopped working.
I imagine this is all due to a cable fault. If so, the required replacement job is pretty basic, isn't it? Be grateful for any tips.
Many thanks,
John

Hello, if the speedometer is working then the cable is probably fine. If the needle jitters it is probably grease that has worked its way to the top of the cable and into the back of the speedometer. If the mileage counter has stopped working then that is an internal fault in the speedometer and there are some details on how to repair it on this site, but the innards are a bit of a mare so it may simply be better to replace the whole unit, or you could replace the whole dashboard with a second hand one (of about the right mileage) for a lot less hassle. Bests, bogbasic.
