Is this bad/terminal damage?

Post by Cliché Guevara » 14 May 2013 05:06 am

Hey everybody how are we all?
Oppinions please. Is that crease in my bodywork bad news? In pic 1 that is between the air filter and the screenwash bottle.

A rear tyre blew out in the wet at about 70 mph went into a spin and hit a grass bank.Mrs an 2 boys ok just a bit bruised and shaken up.She managed to miss all the oncoming traffic.

The fact that it was a Volvo meant that it didn't fold up on impact.

The only damage I can see is OSF wing/indicator and lower ball joint.Wishbone assy and chassis members all ok,even the bumper survived!
The only thing that I'm cincerned about is that little kink on the inner wing.

Over to you

Glad you all came out of it with only minor injuries. It doesn't look too bad tbh, as long as you're handy with a welder or know someone who is, that could probably be pulled straight - it looks to me like the valance has absorbed much of the impact. I'd get some more pictures of around the strut tops and possibly have a look underneath to see if the impact has rippled along the chassis rails to the firewall/floor. But from what you've posted, it doesn't look too bad. Inner wings aren't too unfixable

As for me I'm a frenchman living in New Zealand, right at the foot of a dormant (hopefully!) volcano Mt Taranaki in the north island.

Been here for 3 years before that in the UK where R5 Gordinis were my thing.I sold one and kept a convertable at my parents place in France.

My daily driver here is a Mk2 Golf diesel turbo.

I like 80s and 70s cars cant stand modern cars, the volvo is just on my threshold for age.

Here is a link to the ad I saw.

So is it 28 splines on the clutch?

Does not look that bad at all to me. I have seen much worse damage repaired up with no problems.

There is nothing just that crease in the front inner wing. The centre part of the valence is ok.Just the bit that is on the inside of the wing is a bit bent. The top edge where the wing bolts on has moved and closed the gap that meets the bonnet. All the doors open correctly and the windscreen didn't crack.I think that when the lower ball joint snapped none of the energy got transfered through the wishbone to the chassis. The wheel still spins and track rod ends are all sound.I'm really pleased with how it coped with the impact. My wife who wasn't keen on me selling her 10 year old Mitsy to buy a 27 year old Volvo is now smitten and wont have anything else.

Sadly being a 27 year old car the insurance payout aint gonna be much.Over here (NZ) once the insurance pays out they de register the car and it has to be revinned.A brand new wing and indicator + labour will be more than the car will ever be worth.

I have a new MOT 5 days old new clutch new LED lights and new front tyres invested in it.

Just wait and see sm25 340pw

Given how rare they are in NZ, it's a difficult call. In the UK, I'd probably be persuading you away from it unless you were *very* attached to the car.

The bit that has the big crease in the first pic is a box section, designed to take a fair chunk of force from what I can work out (there are only those and the chassis rails that are boxed before the windscreen from memory). See my first pic, follow the rubber bung in the second pic and you can work out exactly where it is. That box (that has rusted through towards the windscreen) follows down

Infact, you can probably trace it better in these ones on my other car

If you repair the box as it's supposed to be, and make *sure* that nothing has moved (take some diagonal measurements as well as straight measurements from the top mounts to the subframe bolt and the subframe threaded holes in the chassis rail to something like the rear leafspring mount, to be able to draw a triangle for *each* pickup point) then it is certainly possible. It's not a small job to do properly though.

I have both Thatcham and Volvo repair guides at home, I'll try to dig them out.

If you've snapped the balljoint, could have put a bit of force into the chassis. Make sure there are no wrinkles in the wheel arch beside the radius arm mounting. Unusual for the ball joint to snap.

Generally no worries about alignment if the wrinkles are beyond the wheel mounting points away from the centre of the car.

Thankyou all very much for the replies and info.I have been quoted $800 (£425) to straighten it out half that amount if they can do it in a day.My insurance will pay out $2000 (£1063) and let me keep the car and logbook.I have new things like a clutch, battery and fancy LED lights + the knowledge that it has always been looked after invested in it.I'm not rich enough to buy a newer or better car. This one is an absolute peach to work on.I have removed the front subframe to check all the wishbone assemblies and where they bolt on.All seems good.No creases in rails apart from poor jacking methods. But look at the engine mounts! They are staight now though sm4
