Heater Issues
Heater Issues
Hi there,
I was having issues with my heater as it was always blowing cold even on the hot setting, and the car didn't seem to run up to temperature properly. I thought maybe this was a thermostat issue. Anyway I felt under the footwell with the heaters on hot, and I could actually feel some heat! Just not through the face facing ones. After 10 seconds of directing the heat through the footwell, the heaters decided to pack up altogether and doesn't blow anything.
Any suggestions please?
Thanks,
Jamie

Re: Heater Issues
The 2 centre vents only have a cold air feed.
If the other vents are not getting hot sounds like you have a stuck/broken heater valve. I have replacments for later cars in stock but not early ones.
Has the heater fan now stopped working? If so then that is a separate issue

Re: Heater Issues
I see. It definitely felt like I was getting some heat from under the footwell - that's what made me crank it up to number 4 and that's what made the fan suddenly stop working and not blow at all - as if something blew. Going on that the heater valve should be ok? Wondering if it's the resistor pack.

Er, is this a Spinal Tap heater edition?TeH_Jamie wrote:crank it up to number 4
Re: Heater Issues
Yes most likely the resistor pack thermal cutout inside the air box near the fan. Mac is showing a refurb/rebuild method on these in another thread, but a common bodge is to short it out. The bodge comes with an increased theoretical fire risk.
McP means its only goes up to 3 using it on full power should not be a problem, but the thermal cutout tends to warp and corrode.

Re: Heater Issues
Bit of an update:
I bashed the black heater box underneath the bonnet and the fan came back on when I turned the switch on. I put some spray grease on the fan and ran it for some more and it cut out again - sounds to me like the motor is overheating?

Re: Heater Issues
The thermal cut out is in the resistor pack, its a common fault. The motors are fairly reliable.
To test try just connecting 12V to the motor directly, or feel the back of the motor to see if it getting unusually hot.

I just found it a bit weird that it kicked back in again once I gave the black heater box under the bonnet.Ride_on wrote:The thermal cut out is in the resistor pack, its a common fault. The motors are fairly reliable.

I'll test the motor to see if any unusual heat is coming from it.
Assuming that's ok, what are the chances of me finding a replacement resistor pack around?

It's a bit weird, but it's also where the resistor pack lives.TeH_Jamie wrote:I just found it a bit weird that it kicked back in again once I gave the black heater box under the bonnet.
Read this thread http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... =5&t=14906 and maybe ask "mac" if he needs any more testers?
Re: Heater Issues
Good idea.
Will a resistor pack for a 1.4 1986 340 fit a 1.7 1987 340?

Re: Heater Issues
Probably, there are some different between older cars I think. around 86 should be fine.
