Electric windows mirrors not working

Hi my son has just bought 1991 340 5 door 1.4. I've sent off for Haynes but in the meantime his electric mirrors and both electric windows are not working, well the drivers window went half way down and now nothing from the windows and mirrors. Is this likely to be a fuse? If so which one please. If not a fuse (i.e. because they are separate) then what else might it be. Many thanks indeed for any suggestions.

Unlikely to be a fuse, usualy problems are the switch or the motor, but if both mirror and window are not working then could be a wiring issue.
try swapping the passenger switch over to eliminate the switch.

DOH!
If you look in the
Board index ‹ V3M LIBRARY ‹ Official technical resources & information ‹ Green books section of this very forum and look at the topic "
Wiring diagrams", you'll find the PDF link below:
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=7261
In that you'll find all the wiring diagrams from 1981 onwards. I guess that when the driver's door window got half-way down, it overloaded and blew fuse no. 9. Looking in the book, that is on the top row, second in from the inner wing.
Why it overloaded is another matter. (obstruction / corrosion?)
Page 4 says it is 25A. (Most of the rest are 8A, a few are 16A and the remaining one or two are 25A)

Ah, very helpful as I've now got the drivers side window working with some WD40. The passenger's side is not working but I think the main reason has been lack of use so I have tried to WD40 the motor and winding mechanism but it still is not working. No noise from it but it is definitely pulling current as the dash lights dim and I guess if I kept the button pressed down longer it would blow the fuse. Mr Haynes manual has still not turned up.
Is it worth taking the window motor off and fiddling with it? Is it easy to get at the motor and the door winding mechanism? Are replacements freely available?
Again very many thanks, Lee

Hello, you can take the motors off and open them up - the problem will probably be a lack of grease in the gearbox or there will be carbon from the brushes on the copper contacts to be cleaned off carefully. Fiddly spanner work and dismantling but it should cure it...
... and, sad but true, its one of my favorite topics that I blog about!

Hi, i checked the fuse, which obviously wasnt, because its the same one as the lights on the dashboard.
Then checked the buttons switched the wiring just in case. These are the easiest things to do and check off.
Now that i knew it was the motor, mechanism on the door i popped open the door cover. 4 screws and the one on the coin tray. Then i oiled the mechanism on the window, shaking it a bit in case it was dried up or rusted. Took the motor off and made sure it was swivelling freely. Again wd40 on it. Fiddled about with the button up and down and noticed current was going to it. After around 10 mins it loosened up and the window began working!!
