Wing sealant

Post by Ride_on » 01 Jun 2014 04:36 pm

Just about to put my wings back on and wondering what sealant I should be using and how to apply etc.

I have sealed the wings with resin primer and have some polyurethane sealant aswell as butyl mastic sealant. The butyl matsic is like the stick stuff that holds the door plastic on. I guessed this was the stuff that gums up the wings.

Hello, I have just used several doses of waxoyl in the past which seems to set fairly stiff but still flexible.... but I always thought the proper stuff for the top edge was DumDum by Eastwood? Around the headlight area they seem to have used a thicker-setting substance, like bathroom sealant. I have always just left the old sealant in place and gone waxoyl-mental on top...

... just realised that was a dumb reply because Dum Dum isn't available any more and the replacement which is marketed as the 'next best thing to Dum Dum' is butyl sealant.... dahhhhh, which takes us right back to your original point and suggests butyl is the right stuff to go for....

Paint the car first, before sealing the wings on?

PU seam sealer.

Go mad with Sikaflex 221 for the wing.

What does the Volvo body manual say? Have you got a Volvo body manual? Is there one in the Tech Section?

So many questions I don't have time to look up just now. Food for thought.

I have used the sticky undrying mastic butyl stuff on the top and arch parts, and Tiger seal PU on the overlap joints to the sill and valence. The PU dries hard and sticks the edges when a clamp is used. My wing was a bit bowed out and this helped it to dry flush.

Wings are going on first then, stonechip then going out to get properly sprayed.

The mastic comes on a roll with a wax tape and sticks very well. Its 4x4mm or so.
