1.7 340 Starter sticking on when battery is low?

If my battery is a bit low and i go to start the car the starter will stick on. The car usually wont start but i can hear the starter trying to turn the engine over. This means i need to jump out and disconnect the battery before damage is done.

If i reconnect the battery straight away i can her the starter trying to go again. This doesnt happen if i leave the battery disconnected for a few minutes.

It starts no problem when the battery is good and ive been driving the car for a few days. What would the problem be?

Sounds like an unusual fault, there is not much else other than the solenoid must be a bit sticky. Its just not showing up with a full charge.

Taking it out, cleaning and lubricating the solenoid will probably releive it for a while at least. I'm not expert on the 1.7 but I don't think you will need any special tools.

Flip never thought, I had the starter off last week to do the clutch!

Having said that I've started driving the car every day so the battery is well charged and its give no bother.

Hopefully that's it, the car lay up a long time before I got it.

Are you sure the battery is well charged? If its being used daily and still getting 'low' somethings not right. Is there 14+v across the battery when the engines running?
