Can't open rear left door - not as simple as it seems...

Post by adcyork » 12 Nov 2014 11:50 pm

I've got a bit of a problem with the nearside rear door.

It wouldn't open from the outside even though it was unlocked so I opened it from the inside with the plan of taking the interior trim off to investigate. In the time it took me to get my screwdriver from the toolbox my niece, blissfully unaware of what is up, thought it would be clever to flick the child lock and shit the door.

So I'm now left with a door that's impossible to open form the inside or out, has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

its a bit extreme but the door hinges on the B pillar unbolt. try unbolting it and see if you can open it London cab style.

The trim panel should come off and then have a fiddle somehow??

If the door card is on, then the only way I know is to cut through the card.

I've done similar, rear door handle failed so I removed the operating lever so the door could open from the inside, but not out. 18 months later, I'd forgotten how I'd immobilised the lock, so without thinking thought I must have done the child lock (not thinking it operates in the reverse) and proudly shut the door too prove it worked....

Luckily in the 18 months I hadn't refitted the door card.

Should it not be possible to flick the child lock from the outside with a bit of bent metal or stiff wire loop in through the shut line? Try practicing on the other door.

If anyone cuts the door card to repair a lock, I will cry. I had a look today and it should be possible to remove the door card with the door closed - it might help to remove the rear seat, but probably won't. I would rather use a Dremel or drill to cut through the old door handle, which will have to be replaced anyway.

Ye olde thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4945 might shine some light on non-opening doors and where to aim a coathanger

Sorry, its a no-brainer, seat removal will help a lot, but you would have found that out anyway {^¿^}

If you can get the door card off with the door shut, perfect. Given the angle you have to tilt the rear door cards to remove them, I didn't think it would be possible. Cutting through the door handle won't help though surely? You need to pull on the bit of coat hanger that connects the outer handle to the door lock when in this situation, so killing either handle isn't going to open the door?

Well done on resurrecting that old thread MacP :-)

I can't remember how I did it (last time was back in 2007) but you can definitely remove the door card while the door is shut. Opening the door from the inside with the child lock on was fiddly, but do-able with a screwdriver.

A much harder job was replacing the door handle - I couldn't manage and got a garage to do it.

Cheers
