Heater Blower Problem
Heater Blower Problem
The heater blower on my 88' 360GLT has decided suddenly to stop working, it does not work on any of the three speeds, but you can hear the relay clicking when you put the switch to position 3. Obvious checked the fuse(s), as according to the owners handbook and Haynes, two seperate fuses control the blower, one does speeds 1&2, and the other does speed 3.
Have used a test light and there does not appear to be any power at the connection clip just before the wiring goes into the back of the fan motor, are there any resistors or anything else I should check ?
All other electrics fed from the heater blower fuses appear to work perfect.
any help/ideas/suggestion very much appreciated.

Erm, I seem to think the heater matrix is the one to look at. I remember sometime ago one of my parents GLT's needing a part relacing as the heater stopped working, actually found the part the other day in a clear out of rubbish. I cannot be sure, but I think this would cause a similar problem. HTH.

Its the little overheat bimetallic protector strip in the resistor pack that has either corroded or gone soft and bent out of shape.
You'll need to take the air intake box out by removing the two screws and the bolt and then separate it by carefully springing out the clips. Careful with those little blighters though, sometimes no knowing where they'll spring to:)
You'll see a big springy looking thing. Thats the resistor pack, and just beside it is a bimetallic strip, this is a safety feature that bends to break the contact if the resistor coils overheat, preventing a fire, but they always go soft/corrode and stop working. Gently clean or bend until it makes contact.
OBviously if you bend it, you're going to risk not getting the fire prevention you should, so really you should be replacing the whole resistor pack. Cost about 35 quid from the dealer, but I took the risk and just bent mine so it was making gently contact.

Holy thread resurrection!
A similar issue hit my 1986 360 this morning. I switched the fan on to speed 1 with the dial – nothing. Position 2 and 3, also nothing.
Kept trying and couldn’t get it to go, so though “must be a fuse”. Then, as I hit about 60 on a dual carriageway, I tried again and it started to blow gently on the first two settings, and nothing on 3. Then, I got a gentle draft from three, and after that all three speeds seemed to be working as normal.
I’m hoping it won’t crop up again, but, if it does, is pettaw’s solution (above) the one I should be looking at?
Cheers all.

Yup, though they are no longer available from the dealers. They are super easy to make work from another car though (mk2 Golf is about the right size and has a much better design of thermal fuse, about £14 new) you just have to change from the spade connections on the 300 orig heater resistor pack to bullet connectors for the Golf one.

Re: Heater Blower Problem
Oh, one other question.
If I were to walk in to a motor factors to get this thing for a Mk2 Golf, what am I asking for? A Heater Resistor Pack? Want to avoid a if possible!
Cheers,
Steve

This is what I used on an old setup
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-MK2-GOLF-HEATE ... 334wt_1139
Though seemingly they are too now out of availability. Pretty much everything will fit electrically, it's just physically mounting it that you have to think about, so might be worth a quick flick through a parts catalogue online.

Oo, just had another thought also.
My car's got aircon. Does that make the Golf II unit unsuitable? Would I specifically need a resistor specifically for a 360 with aircon??

A/C cars don't have a different resistor pack, I wouldn't worry ...Alanovich wrote:Oo, just had another thought also.

Re: Heater Blower Problem
Is this the heater resistor, or something else entirely?

Re: Heater Blower Problem
Thats the heater matrix, so different bit I'm afraid. I should get involved with the conversion kit I was going to do, or at least some instructions.

OK, thanks. I'm not even sure that's the item giving me problems yet, but just wanted to earmark this link just in case.
