Which engine/year?

Is it choking when you apply power or is it purely revs and not load related?

In older cars the condenser can short out at higher rpms if it needs replaced, otherwise you could have an ignition problem wth leads or something. Try viewing your engine bay in complete darkness with it ticking over and also at higher rpm.

A load related problem is usually related to a weak spark, rpm related to insulation breakdown.
