Boot lock falling out...

Post by SteveP » 16 May 2016 08:13 pm

Finally tackled the issue on my GLT... the classic boot lock falling out of the housing on the boot lid. Basically the roll pin falls out of it's slot or snaps/disintegrates or simply vanishes (I couldn't seen any sign of the original!)

It occurred to me most of the way through that there wasn't a write up of this so I took a few (not enough!) pictures - I was in a bit of a hurry. These instructions are for a 'Mk3' hatchback - the earlier and saloon cars may be subtly different, but the same principle will apply.

Many thanks to Mac for supplying the correct size roll pin. You'll need the following size:

Image

Image

1. Open the boot (Are you still with us?)
2. Remove the plastic rear cover which covers the wiper motor
3. Take a look at the bootlid catch and perhaps mark it's location relative to the bootlid as there is some 'adjustment' in the catch
4. Unhook the catch to bootlid 'button' linkage (I found it easier to slide it out of the bootlid 'button')

Image

5. Undo the 4x10mm bolts holding the catch to the bootlid
6. Feed the catch through the bootlid and extract it through the large hole where you can access the wiper motor

Image

7. Undo the 10mm nut holding the lock housing to the bootlid, you'll need a medium size extension bar and access to this is via the hole just created from removing the bootlid catch

Image

8. Remove the lock housing from the bootlid from the 'outside'

Image

7. Inspect the lock barrel and lock housing - you can see a slot in the housing which lines up with the hole in the lock barrel
8. Place the lock barrel back into the housing, line up the hole with the slot and gently tap the new roll pin into place
9. Refitting is the reverse of removal (ha)...

TIP: Hook the linkage on to the bootlid catch first as you replace it and then you can just slide the 'straight' end on to the lock housing. Pay attention to the positioning of the 4x10mm nuts in relation to the bootlid so your catch is in the same position.

All in all a quick 15 minute job and a very common issue! Some pics courtesy of Mac himself which illustrate the roll pin position and dimensions you'll need.

Cool, I was planning on trying to define these, but managed to get a good recovered part.

BTW are you missing the seal?

Also wondering about lubricant, have been using silicon brake slider/polybush stuff. Most of my cars have lived outside and it seems moisture gets in there and the alloy corrodes with the steel springs, siezing the lock.
