Milometer broken after fixing it

Post by sssu1 » 08 Sep 2016 02:20 pm

So I fixed my milometer following the guide in viewtopic.php?t=4147 , but now it has stopped working again. First time I just opened the instrument panel again and noticed there was nothing out of ordinary to be seen, and just put it back together. Then again today the milometer stopped working and I opened it again and there was nothing that seemed broken, so I put it back together, but this time it doesn't work. I drove a 400m trip around the block and there was no movement in the meters, except the trip meter jumped from 0 to half to 1 at one point.

Speedometer is working normally.

Any ideas what should I check? Could there be some problems with the electrical connections in the instrument panel? Or does the milometer work just from the speedo cable?

Hello sir,

I tried to follow that thread and make the same repair a few years ago but it just didn't work out for me so replacement with a good second hand unit of about the right mileage or clocked to the right mileage should sort it out.

Bests for now, bogs.

Replacement part seems to be about 50€+20€ postage, which is quite a hefty sum for such a small problem. I'll drive a bit more and open it once more and see if I find anything unusual.

I've got he same problem I found the little geared wheel and pin had come out of its housing. Sorry that does not explain it very well but the odometer has dropped on the right hand side a little where the pin/shaft has come out and dropped away from its drive.
I have to pull the whole lot out again a see if I can make it stay fixed this time. Hopefully I will take a photo and give a better fix to it.
Its not too hard to do.
Remove horn pad on steering wheel then 24mm socket and undo steering wheel nut then remove wheel.
Remove the two covers under the dash - one just above the pedals & the other just below the steering wheel.
Unscrew two star screws under the top of instrument cluster then two just below the inst. cluster.
Undo speedo cable unplug the wiring connections - 2X rectangular plugs and 1X small single wire plug (on my car 1985 Aussie version)
Then remove the inst. cluster tilting top forward.
Unscrew the 8-10 screws around the back then undo the 4 nuts on the back of the speedo and remove then pry off the needle carefully. undo the two small flat screws on the front of the odometer/speedo then you can see the little worm wheel bit which on mine has come out of its proper place. Hopefully I can do something to stop it from coming out again.
Take care to put the needle back in the right place as I put mine back on where it is reading 10-15 kms above the real speed. I need to partially put the needle on at about minus 10kms then swing the needle past the stop. Hopefully then it will read correctly.
Long winded explanation I know but Oh well I am on nightshift and not much is happening at work so here I am at 2:30 am on a Saturday morning wanting to work on the 360 but am stuck at work.

Yup I already fixed the gear dropping off of the worm wheel, I just glued and taped a piece of hard plastic to block the topmost number wheel from sliding to the side, but still allowing it to rotate. Its just that it only worked for a while (around 380km), and then stopped working again. Though this time the gear is still properly on place and everything seems to be in order.

Hmm that does not sound good, I have since read a full post or two on how to fix the wheel coming off with photos etc so I won't repost it again of yet another how to fix it. Not sure what is going wrong with yours though. Hope it is resolved soon though.

Hello Martinp, this site is pretty quiet (sometimes its just me and Mac - scary ﷼ ^¿^ ﷼ ) so a link or two to the old posts can be really helpful.

OK guys as per above post I should have grabbed the link of the other post here it is viewtopic.php?f=56&t=2009
I hope that can point you in the right direction as there are other links associated with it it does cover nearly everything you could possible do with the speedo set up. SSSU1 I wonder if the speedo cable has come out causing yours to not work properly (at the wheel end of the cable) just a thought.
Cheers all
Martin.

Hiya again I got mine working, but the speedo is a little out the other way now :-( I'm doing 110kms at 102 indicated) bother, it all comes out again ...

SSSU1 The only thing a stuck speedo could be that I can think of is something has dropped in it and jammed it up - maybe good luck with it. Rip it out again and have a look.

Been analyzing the situation for a while now, and the milometer seems to be working fine, except at about 35-50km it stops and usually works again after letting it cool and starting the car again. Also there are random stops here and there at any mileage, but they usually last only a day.

Hmm my trip meter has also gone on the blink. It will work for around 30-50kms then just finish for the day. Sometimes it will work for only 1-2 kms but normally once it cools down it will work again but not for long. I can't get the darn thing apart, the clear plastic bit with the wheels and numbers from the base.
I guess I will just leave it as is.
At least I can see how fast I am going.
