Heater controller slider broken

Hello
As the topic says, I managed to break my heaters control slider, the one that decides where it should blow the air. (Windshield or legs or both or...)
A quick search returned no usable info to me.
So the actual problem is small, the cable has snapped, but the big question is: how to get to it. I've read the finnish translation of always so famous Haynes manual, but only managed to find out how to remove the whole dashboard, and thats a pretty big job for such a small breakdown.
So, I'm kindly asking you to tell me if the whole heating panel -thingy is separately removable, without dismantling the whole dashboard. And how it should be done. Any other suggestions about fixing the problem are also accepted, of course.
Thanks in advance.

its quite easy to get to. remove the radio and the you will find a metal plate screwed in above where the radio was held in with 2 screws, remove that. then you will find to other screws holding in the heater contol unit, take them out, and there you go.

As he said, and then to get to the other end, take out the passenger (for RHD cars at least) footwell/center tunnel carpet, and you can get to the other end, the outer sheath is held in by a philips screw.

All the above info sounds right! Are you sure the cable is broken, as IIRC it's the short cable for direction of vents? Sometimes if theres enough resistance, it's merely the slider jumping from the pivot, as it's only a push fit. Simple cure, of slotting it back into place, it'll be obvious that it's come apart once it's all out.
Having played about with getting the heater controls out the other day, does anyone have any tips on getting the cables out of their connectors while the panel is nearly in position but unscrewed, as the cables reduce the amount of movement, so you can't get it out enough to get your fingers in to unlatch the cables. But the whole panel etc is too big to driop lower due to the connecting screw fixing legs being wider etc, so it's all a bit of a fiddle!
I'm not 100% sure on what you mean about the philips screw Chris? On the one's I've dealt with, the end of the cable goes into a white plastic split clip, that fits into a hole as a pivot on the lever end near the bulkhead, and from memory both of the outer cable coverings are clipped in on metal clips that are folded over.

Thank you very much for a quick answer. I will try to go trough the radio. I have removed the radio and the metal cage before too, but hadn't noticed the heater screws.
And what comes to the cabel snapping, what Pete said about it just jumping off is most likely the thing to look for.
So thank you all again, I'll probably try to fix it later today.

On mine Pete (well, on Kar, not checked Fake) the top end is the spring clip that tries to kill you as you are fitting it back on, but the one on the bottom (flap) end has a philips, which is why its easier to do the lever end first!

So it took about a week, but I think I managed to fix it.

Changed a few light bulps from the dashboard on the way and it looks nice in the dark now.

The cable had snapped, so I re-made the controlling cable from cutting it from a 2.5 meter long choke accessory cable.

It works now, about, probably the original spare part wouldn't have been too expensive, but I'll replace my patent with it if I come across an original some day.
Anyhow, thanks all for your help.
