Daytime running lights

Post by baz » 24 Aug 2007 11:45 pm

At last the 360 has arrived the cars in good condition for a vehicle with close to 300,000 kms on the clock but for a few things that need fixing it has daytime running lights which run as soon as the ignition is turned on i understand these are a safety item but in this country where temperatures can get as high as 40 degrees celsius in the summertime they have one drawback every plastic light fitting in the car has melted due to heat including the instrument panel around the panel light bulbs
I'm away to the wreckers today to find replacements but want to disable this "feature" so it cant happen again
Theres no legal requirement in this country to have them so it will be a saving in light bulbs etc
After driving the car i was surprised how unresponsive the engine is my 340 1.7 will leave the b20E in the dust as far as speed and responsiveness goes I think they may have different final drive ratios the 340 at redline in 3rd gear is doing 90 mph the 360 75 mph and its sounding very unhappy that it has been asked to do this speed
On paper the b200e has more power but to drive it you would think the B172K was the more powerful engine I even spent 3 hours yesterday on the gravel roads in the country thrashing it thinking maybe town running had choked it up all i got was a very hot engine with still no power to speak of
Next step is to go through the injection system to see if i can find the missing part of its 115 horsepower as it appears that half those horses are asleep at the moment

I would just put a relay which cuts the lights when light switch is on position 0. :P

B200E should be more responsive when everything's in condition, though I've never driven non-turbo version so my opinions might be "little" biased.

360 got far better tuneability options though. ;)

What you say about the relative speeds of the 340 and the 360 is interesting. Personally, I also think that the 1.7 feels faster and more eager to rev than the 2.0. However, I recently took part in a drag race pitting a standard 360GLT against a stripped 1.7 340 with a welded diff. Although the 340 was quicker off the line (I put that down to the driver), the 360 was about two car lengths ahead when it crossed the line. Unfortunately, I've no idea of times because we were just playing about on a runway with no timing gear.

Hope you manage to get it working to your satisfaction. :)

Interesting that about difference between the 360 and 340 1.7

I personaly have found them to be very close with the 360 having more torque and the 1.7 being free reving.

you say your 1.7 340 did 3rd gear 90mph

my 1.4 does that in 3rd. 2nd gear drags out to 65max

i love my volvo:D

bye bye saxos

If I remember correctly the 1.7 will do about 105 - 110 MPH in 3rd gear and a 360 with no rev limiter will do the same obviously on a private test track

My aus delivered 360 had a switch for the daytime running lights on the centre console infront of the gear lever. i presume yours should be the same.

found the culprit

Post by baz » 26 Aug 2007 11:52 am

on the main light switch theres a heavy green wire which is live when the ignition is switched on i carefully removed it from the block connector and no more lights when the key is turned on i've made use of the wire it now powers my sat nav unit i had a look behind the dash of my 340 it doesnt have the green wire to the light switch so likely never had the daytime running lights, all lights still work as they should but now no park/tail/dash lights when the key is turned on

why not just wire a switch and fuse inline?

Hang on, where you just talking about the parkers? daytime running lights are what is in the fornt bumper of my 360, 55W and they basically point at the ground right infront of the car, so you can run them all the time if you want, or switch them of with the switch infront of the gear shifter, useless at nighttime though.

The parkers coming on as soon as the key is in the on position is something most volvos i have seen have, my car had a problem with blowing parkers for some reason, and the left one is a downright PITA to replace, so i just pulled them both out.

I thought they were front foglights. At least they are in the UK. Some models did have day runners and cutting the green wire is the correct way to disable them.
