Mk2 Central locking

Post by Ronnie » 06 Nov 2007 12:25 am

Anyone ever transplanted central locking into a Mk2?

Anyone know if it was an option in 1984? The brochure i have sugests not.

Wondering whether I just need the solenoids, or the entire locking mechanisms too.

Also - does the boot lock too. I'm pretty sure my Mk3 GLTS didn't include the boot, but maybe on later models?

Cheers in advance

iirc the redlines boot was not on the central locking system ,

you could always use a modern aftermarket system with remote control,

there are loads of kits on ebay that once you have got the wiring into the doors ((probably the hardest bit ) are virtually plug and play

probably less likely to go wrong than a second hand system 17 years plus old and apart from when you wave the the remote about ,only those that read this  and you would know

Pretty sure it was available in 84, the A plate GLT I went to see with the intentions of buying had it... (although the car turned out to be a piece of crap...)

Central locking was first available from Volvo in the 1984 model year, when the door mirrors moved forward ...

Nice one guys - I'm assuming the servos will have all the attachment points already available on the car, just have to get hold of some and plug em in. Anyone got a master and slave c/l servo kicking about? (It's only a 3 Door)

Hi mate, the boot was never on the central locking, which is IMO a good thing, for instance when sat at traffic lights or in traffic someone can't nick stuff from your boot! The hardest thing is threading wires though the doors, but other than that, should be simple enough, especially with a 3 door!

I bought an aftermarket kit with remote controle. 30 euro's, and real easy to fit. Wiring is easy: ad the plus and minus, and the motors work. Bit fumbling with fitting and your ready!

Yeah the wires can be tricky, also the old rubber boot, through which the wires go to the door, usually breaks in pieces when you try to fit anything more than stock speaker wires through it.. So it's good to have replacements at hand when installing central locking.

Yeah, I have been surprised at how cheap they are looking on ebay, Maplin etc. - and would really like the remote facility, so will probably go down that route.

Thanks for that, great to have warning of probelms like that - but where to get new rubber boots when Volvo have deleted such essentials as shock absorbers! sm14

Can you get kits with auto closing windows? I know it's incredibly childish but I used to giggle every time my cavalier windows rolled up by themselves as I strutted away like a knob.

ifr your car has central locking you can fit a unit like this for window closure ( also remote engine starting )

My car hasn't got electric windows so no good to me! Electric windows would be fun too, but i'd need Volvo 3 door units from a 340 I guess - which can't be that common

If there are no switches for heated seats next to handbrake lever then I think those are controlled by thermostat. Switches on when temps drop low enough, but usually either the element it self or the thermostat is broken.

Yeah, they come on automatically if it's cold in the car, and then switch off when it warms up - perfect. My drivers one works great but the passanger one doesn't - haven't investigated why yet
