'top executive' radio

Post by antiekeradio » 27 Sep 2008 10:30 pm

Today was the first day of the "Volvo Klassieker Beurs" in Utrecht, NL.
(Volvo Classic Fair)

I was at the V3C stand, but got a chance to 'run around' the fair and scan for interesting stuff.

result!

It even has a microphone!! for memo recording.. (plus it also records from radio)

Some interesting features:

- AVI connector at the back. (this was an experimental system for traffic info like RDS-TMC as we know it today)
- 2 different antenna inlets (one with normal plug, the other with a BNC connector)
- connector with 3 wires, with an unknown function.
might be a 'line out' or even 'line in' ? but i'm not sure at all!

Sounds really cool, but it seems those links are not working unless you have account at V3C ?

I just wonder how well microphone can record in 300 on highway, when I remember hearing people complaining they can't hear me when speaking on phone

fixed the pictures in the first post!!

who can tell me what the function of the white/yellow connector with 3 wires is? (can be seen in the bottom right of the 'wires' picture)

I am thinking maybe line in/ line out but maybe its something totally different.

I'll see if any signal comes out; 3 wires usually means its a stereo channel.

in or out, thats the question :)

could it be this

HIC 【Hybrid Circuit】
full spelling : Hybrid Integrated Circuit

Hybrid Integrated Circuit or HIC which also known as simply Hybrid is an electronic circuit constructed of individual devices, such as semiconductor devices (transistors and diodes) and passive components (resistors, inductors and capacitors).

In the early days the term Hybrid Circuit was also used to describe circuits where both transistors and vacuum tubes were used simultaneously. Modern hybrid circuit technologies allow embedding of components within the layers of a multi-layer substrate in addition to components placed on the surface of the substrate.

Could it be tape selector switch? I know that it is not Metal II or anything like that, but perhaps Hi-Cassette?

Just guessing here, I'm probably not guessing even close, but at least idea is thrown to air ;)

OK I have built a makeshift test setup with 12V power supply, a bunch of rectangle (25W) Volvo speakers, and ofcourse a Volvo radio counterplug connecting it all together :P

I must say I am stunned by the difference in quality between this radio and a 'regular' Volvo 4-Stereo radio (which only has 2 AF amplifiers)
Not only does it have 4 amps inside, but the sound quality of each channel is much better, too!

If you plug in the microphone, the running of the tape deck is controlled by the switch on the mike. Very handy to eliminate large 'whitespace' when you are using it as memo recorder.

The Hi-C button

Has an influence on the sound. When switched on, the sound is 'softened' a bit, without too much detriment to the highest notes. Mid-high is turned down, you could say.

did not look into the extra cable yet. Might hook it up to the 'scope to see what comes out :-)

That radio looks fantastic, I think I saw something similar in the '76 accessory brochure?

Is the tape player 8-track or a regular MC?

My twiddly-knob Volvo stereo has an "AVI" switch which basically meant you could only tune to stations which transmitted traffic reports. It was still working until very recently - I don't think it's the radio function which is defect, more like the radio stations are no longer transmitting the AVI signal ...
