Adhesive for Volvo Badges (and other bits & bobs)

Post by S10NPH » 18 Oct 2009 03:30 pm

Hi

The Volvo badge on the wing of my 1980 345 has come off. What sort of product should I use to stick it back on?

I drove from Cambridge to Norwich and back this weekend in my 345 (about 130 miles). It behaved brilliantly, and I'm very proud of it. I did desperately want fifth gear on many occasions though, to shut it up! However, being in fourth at high speeds does mean that it actually has quite a lot of 'go' in it, for a 1.4. I was passing many more modern cars on the A14 and A11, and attracted some funny looks!

Also, while I'm posting, does anyone know what's the best way to get replacement struts for the rear tailgate - mine barely stays open, and any hint of wind sends it crashing back down (usually onto my head!). I have a Volvo breakers nearby which has a few 340s, but the ones I looked at were pretty weak and hardly better than the ones on my car.

And finally the clock in my dashboard doesn't work - anyone have any ideas what might be the culprit? The choke light doesn't operate either (but I guess that could be the bulb).

Thanks!

Hi Sion,

There are two types of tailgate struts - standard ones, and those with a bit more oomph in them for tailgates with spoilers. Try googleing these part nos, you're bound to find an online shop which sells them:

Quinton Hazell
128252
460 pressure-thingys (spoiler)

Triscan
8710 2701
350 (no spoiler)

Triscan
8710 2711
460 (spoiler)

Volvo may still do them too.

3277879 or 1285917 (no spoiler)
3344245 (spoiler)

Otherwise if you're stuck, try contacting foggyjames, I believe he has a stash of "spoiler" versions.

I don't know why the clock might not be working - maybe someone else here does? I've got a boxed NOS one for your type of dash somewhere I think ...

Tailgate struts : SGS Engineering

I have used them twice and have found them very helpful. Rather than order online (my first set for a Citroen had wrong fittings on one end), I would send the originals back for comparison. They were unable to re-gas my 1982 Volvo ones (but they did succeed in re-gassing my 1978 Citroen pair, apparently one of the oldest they've done) and supplied a new pair with the tailgate light switch (as fitted to the top of the right-hand old one) transferred from the old one.

Given the small price difference between re-gassing and new, I'd just get new ones. Just so there is no confusion with end fittings I'd send them the old ones for comparison (and transfer of the light switch if fitted) and/or speak to them on the phone.

To re-gas and send back a pair for my GS it was £25.88. To supply/deliver new for the Volvo it was £38.51. (Price correct Aug 2009)

The original struts on my 343DL which has no rear wiper or spoiler were rated at 350N. This may need to be increased for the additional items. Other owners may be able to comment on what is stamped on the cylinders of their struts in those applications.

I can recommend Scotch (3M) VHB tape for the adhesive. You'll have a hell of a time getting anything loose again that's been stuck together with VHB. And it lasts for a _long_ time. The only problem is, it isn't cheap stuff.

For the struts, Motonet (the local supplier again) delivers 350N without spoiler 14 eur per strut, or 460N with spoiler 19.90 eur per strut. Of course the 350N ones were made by Destek (Bursa, Turkey, http://www.desteklift.com ) so they're not OEM... but at that price, who'd expect that? And they seem to work. No experience with the 460N ones yet though.

Off topic, but it's pretty easy to swap gearboxes on the 340's. You could always get a 5 speed box from a later 1.4 (better suited final drive), as far as I'm aware you don't need a new prop either - certainly with later models anyway!

Halfords do a reasonable spongy tape for trim fixing, just make sure everything is super clean first.

Thanks guys. I will have a look for the adhesive stuff in halfords, and will scour the internet for struts. My car will only need the 350N ones, as it doesn't have a spoiler. I will have a look under the dashboard to see if maybe there's a wire loose for the clock - I was just putting it out there in case it was a common easily-fixed problem. I will keep you posted as to my success.

Regarding the gearbox - thanks for the suggestion, but I would rather keep the car standard. It's part of its charm that it only has 4 gears!

in terms of adhesive, i used 'sellotape outdoor sticky fixers' which are double sided black foam pads for outdoor use.

they were easy to trim and give a finish not unlike the proper black backing on new badges. held up fine for around 7k so far in all weathers and not been an issue.

cost me around a quid and had loads left over.

Hi Sion,

Last time i checked, new struts were £10 each from Euro car parts. Cambridge->Norwich is a drive which definitely needs some good overtaking powers when you get stuck behind all the 50mph drivers!

Thanks for your help on this guys. I bought a new strut and now my head is no longer in danger when loading the boot.

The clock has now mysteriously started working again.

However, the battery (which was brand new about 2-3 months ago) has become flat. I took it to a local Wilco and they did a little test, saying that there was a drain on the battery, and that the alternator wasn't charging as efficiently as it should. I'm planning on taking it to a garage when the weather improves to isolate/fix the problem, but does anyone have any advice? I don't use the car much, particularly in the winter now.

Thanks,

Sion

Has it had charging problems before you changed the struts? I only ask as my battery used to go flat until one evening i walked onto my drive and caught a glimpse of light in the boot. On futher inspection the boot light was staying on when the boot was shut.

My solution, disconect the bulb holder

Not had my battery go flat since.

Check your belts are tight enough - they probably are. Alternators do go bad with age and are quite easy to replace. Buy a new or recon one on ebay and fit it yourself. Easy job and no need to pay £40 an hour for some muppet to do it for you.
