Re: Dreaded rust
That hole for a rubber doofer? Not looked at a late car recently and I think mine is too old for it.
Re: Dreaded rust
Yes there can be a flat rubber plug in it, and yes mk2 or later.

Re: Dreaded rust
Are we nearly there yet?
Re: Dreaded rust
Seems like very close, but at the current rate still a good few weeks away from spraying.
Still ;
boot lid repair
Wing repair
engine out (just hoisting really) and bay clean
More flatting, rust spots and stonechip
Then professional spraying

Re: Dreaded rust
lol, been MOTing the 940 last few weeks, its going nicely now after a bit of attention to the wipers, exhaust and new tyres.
360 got difficult boot lid repair done, need to get rubbing down and sealing up. Taking another week off next week, so hopefully should be ready for spraying after that (rolling chassis, no engine, minimal attachements).
Have wing repairs to do, last bit of welding, combining 2 wings, must remember to do it slowly and not warp, bloody cosmetic welding very hard. Seem to have managed with the bonnet using the air line for cooling.

Re: Dreaded rust
Cheers!
I've come back to this thread to work out how the windscreen corners fit together as I've a wee problem to solve
I don't have a very big sheet of copper, but it's handy to clamp onto the back of a weld area to soak up the heat and it doesn't stick. I've also got a piece of copper bar for the same thing:

(er, and no, it isn't finished)
and there's this stuff which appears to be a modern equivalent to asbestos putty.

Re: Dreaded rust
Yes I have some of the cold front stuff, just too lazy to bother using it lol. I've mostly been doing non-cosmetic or very rigid stuff, so I tend to forget about it. Copper or brass is handy for backing up thin material and stopping it blowing through.

Re: Dreaded rust
Ta for the bonus pictures. At least I can half see which way the panels join up and now know where the mystery tiny "tie piece" is in the parts book!
Re: Dreaded rust
Well I thought this might count as a project but I shall languish here in the rust repairs
Have been making good progress, but finding more rust is tricky places.
Wings now repaired and sealed, but needing some filling once once on the car.
Have been having fun with Acid and the bonnet + various small parts.
I found the bonnet had alot of rust inside the mounting box section. There is no way to remove this and maintain the cosmeticness, acid was the only solution (except maybe rust encapsutor, Rust Bullet, but my OCD won't allow that..yet).
So I decided on Phosphoric acid and was able to buy 10L of 85% strength for £50. I then made a 50L box to dip the front of the bonnet, and packed that out with PE foam and newspaper to reduce the volume to about 25L. The box was lined with builders polythene. I then made 30% strength Acid and dipped the bonnet for 4-5 days.
In the end I think this was a bit long as there was a bit of metal loss, but livable. Drying off I used a 5% solution. Phosphoric is supposed to be a converter more than a dissolver, but it certainly seemed to dissolve rust and eat the metal.
Strangely it left a dusty brown residue on the bare metal (which is why I left it in for too long), but this hosed off ok.

Re: Dreaded rust
Interesting idea! I'm not sure what the tanks we have at work are (as well as a de greasing there is a de-rusting in the workshop). That turned a surface rusty iron casting into a dark grey powdery substance on top of solid cast iron, was very odd. Not put steel in though.
