Rear doors wont open

Post by Joker19583 » 14 Nov 2009 02:02 pm

Hello everyone,
got myself an 87 glt this week with a little problem. It seems the locks aren't connected to the central locking and the pin anymore. I tried to disassemble the doorcover from the interior, but despite the 2 removed screws and the windowlifter torn off, it won't come off. Did I miss anything or is that sob really that hard to remove?
Btw: it wiggles..

I presume the screws you have removed are the visible one 1/4 the way from the bottom. There are also 2 screws in the door handle recess (the pull in handle), covered by plugs normally, just pop the plugs out with a screw driver. Then you have to pop off the plastic plugs at the bottom (they can break) and lift upwards to clear the lip over at the top. You also need to remove the trim around the pull open handle, slides off forward I think. It should be straight forward once you know how.

Mostly likely the door lock motors are done, water gets at them, sometimes the mounts are rusted away. If you think getting the door panel was hard, the rear lock motors is alot more dificult.

When I replaced a rear door motor the hardest part of the job was putting the door panel back on. I really struggled to get the window rubber for the quarter light back over the top of the trim, I found the only way was to push the trim down against it and use a screw driver to hook it over the top. In the process I managed to break through the rubber in several places though, right pain in the arse! Is there an easier way?

Yeah, that the right technique but you probably just have to go a little easier on the screwdriver or spread the load more, give the rubber time to move, I've never had a major problem with it.

Ah fair enough, I'll just have to be a little more careful next time I do it. Thanks for the info!

First of all, thanks for the advise and offer,

Further I'd like to give an update on the status.
After removing 2 screws I didn't see, in the grip and on the outer side, the panel was easily removable. Just as I thought the mechanism was overall in good shape except for a broken lever on the outer handle and plenty of rust in the lock itself. Some WD-40 (actually a lot) and it was movable again, thus upgrading my 342 to a 342.5 (can be opened from the inside but not from the outside).

The next steps will maybe undertaken the next weekend.

Btw. anyone experience with the bolt on electric window lifters? My Relay is gone. The handbook implied to put it in the left socket in the fusebox, is that correct?

Not sure what you mean, what bolt are you talking about, or what are 'bolt-on' electric windows.

The electric motors in a normal GLT are easy enough to get out once you know where the bolts are, there are 3 at the back of it, you need a small 10mm spanner and small hands (preferably), I think some of them can be removed with a 1/4 wrench. What has the bolt got to do with relays?

I'm not aware of what relays (If any) are used in the electric windows, and it is likely that the switches are gone, or the motor can get a bit gummed up with water dripping on it. Firstly try the passenger switch in the drivers wiring (easy to do) at the control panel, then if it still doesn't work its probably the gearbox bearing is worn (wobbly gear) or it just needs cleaned and lubricated.
