HELP!!!

Post by JazzMan » 05 Sep 2009 09:24 am

I just bought a car off of Jay aka J340glt, anyway Ive only been using the car to and from work, well I got up to go to work this morning and I started to go down a hill, id already been driving about 5 minutes, I then turned into another road and it didnt wanna go into 2nd gear, I put my foot back on the clutch let the revs drop and then it slotted in as normal, well I then coasted it down the rest of the hill, when I got to the bottom, I then put it into first gear and then tried driving.....
Its didnt move, my foot was completely off the clutch in first gear and it didnt move anywhere!!!
I tried in second just incase it was a gear problem..... Not that either.
anyway, when I was sittting there it was making a clanging noise, Im thinking prop?
Its a 1.7 340 btw
Can anyone help me diagnose it and where to get a replacemnt asap!

If it's the prop, there was one on eBay last week.
Have you checked there man?
They seem to be getting a bit thin on the ground now.

i'm guessing a loose drifeshaft considering the clanging noise (been there, done that  ); take a look under the rear end of the car and see if one of them fell off.

other than that; does it still feel like you go trough the gears just fine; can you go from 1 to 3 of 5 without using the neutral position? (indicating loose mechanism)

Nope no wheelspining or drifting, I preusme I didnt put my foot on the clutch properly and it didnt go into 2nd properly and it gridned, I then let the revs drop back down and dipped the clutch and bunged it in, and then there was no drive, so im presuming when I missed the gear it done it :(

yes; there's a pretty recent topic about the torque setting on this forum but i don't know where this instant.

take the front hex bolt out of the axle and get yourself 2 new identical ones at a shop :D

could've come loose if axle has been removed in the past and not tightend properly, i've had it on one of my cars too in the past. you don't have to drive rough to make that bolt come off.

Getting hard to get hold of now, I even put a bid on that prop to have as a spare.

On the subjet of the bolts coming loose is it worth using thread lock on those bolts? I personaly do but I am now considering also fitting new bolts just to make sure. I'm sure they are high tensile 10.9?

not necassary , it uses the torque on the bolt to lock the bolts in place, tightening with a torque wrench is enough.

if you do wish to use thread lock, make sure you tighten the bolts with the torque wrench before the thread lock becomes hard.

loctite 243 will do this job perfectly
