340 1.4 engine trouble

Post by Ed » 17 Feb 2005 04:42 pm

Thanks to all for the help in my previous post. After some thourough investigation and complaete stripping of the carborettor we have managed to put it down to a fueling problem! what we found was a water cooled base plate the carb was sitting on was completely blocked so no water cooling going on there. We unblocked that a made sure water was running. We have tested everything on the coil and electronic ignition everything is ok. We checked the float in the carb that seemed ok but didnt really seem alot of feul in the chamber. Upon driving the car after we put it back together the car still juddered as you drove, if we pulled the choke out hard it cured the juddering for a second but not for long. If you back off slightly it cures it for a bit but as soon as you accelerate it judders again the carbouretter was absolutely clean no dirt or nothing. Did thewse cars 340 DL 1.4 cvt come standard with a twin choke webber carb on them and could the fuel pump not be powerful enough to deliver fuel to the carb?

any help will be greatly appreciated

regards

Hi Ed

The weber is standard on the 1.4 and the fuel pump (if it is OK) should cope with it.

Check the pump works OK by pulling off the coil HT lead, disconnecting the outlet and with the pipe in a bottle or jar, spinning the engine on the starter.

You should get strong squirts of fuel. A more accurate test would be with a pressure gauge - if you have one I can look up the actual spec for you.

Are all you filters clean - including the mesh one IN the carb and are your fuel lines clear ( see if you can blow down them )

yes alll the filters are clean and all the pipes are clear. Weve checked that fuel is squirting out ok and all is good just seems the car is sucking more petrol out of the fuel chamber quicker than the pump can replace it weve adjusted the float to allow more fuel in the chamber ive got to test this tomorrrow so ill keep you posted!

Think we have cured the problem

To all that may be interested! we believe that we have solved the problem of my engine cutting out after 20 mins of driving. What we did in the end was to adjust the float in the float chamber of the carb to allow nore fuel to sit in the chamber and so far no juddering or engine cut out (touch wood).

thanks to all for all the help and replys

Edward
