random (loud) noise

Post by 5lab » 20 Feb 2005 07:14 pm

ok, got the 340 and its LOUD. basically, when idling you cant hear anything, but whenever the engine is putting load into the wheels there is a loud noise - sounds like it could be the exhaust blowing but it isnt, because you can feel the vibration of the noise thru the acc pedal. let off the gass and it dissapears - i can find the point where it 'starts', and if i hold just below that the noise comes on whenever the car goes over a minor bump in the road - similar to when osmething was hanigng off the bottom of nessy, but theres nothing hanging off. ANY ideas? i'm guessing some bearing or other

Dunno 5lab

Can you say what SORT of noise it is?

Metal on metal knocking? Grinding? Rumbling? Does it do it when the car is stationary or only while driving?

Does the car misfire or run differently when the noise is occuring?

May be the exhaust is rattling against something? I have that issue on the moment, the front pipe hits the front suspension at certain rev-levels. The whole car shakes, and its making the same noise as you say. I have a 360 by the way, but 340's can have it too i think.

it sounds like a knocking noise, similar to the exhaust. i thought that too, but it seems strange it only happens when there is load on the engine - ie back off the throttle and it doesnt happen any more??

For a 360 a engine mount costs 99 euros just for one side. That's real expensive. The fact is that my car makes the sound only when you step off the throttle.

Fiver each from GSF for a 340.

Not worth getting dirty for at the scrappy....

Easy to fit too - just need to get a jack under the engine (bit of wood twixt jack and sump) to take the weight while you change them.

really that easy? does the engine not 'sag' out of place when you've not got all 4 in?

You could always modyfy the mounts, but its messy as they are filled with a oily substance that smells like a cross between fish oil and dog urine, And probably cancer inducing when trying to weld the plate back on with the rubber inside pretty much at the seam ur trying to weld together, but after that we put the mounts back in and it works fine, no resonance areas, no strange noises, no sagging.

i got a dog and you know when its just emptied its bladder, but good call none the less

As for swapping the mounts its not overly hard, you need to put a jack or something to support the weight of the engine, apparently your supposed to remove it from the top where it mounts to the chassis, but i found it easier to take it out from underside where it mounts to the engine.
