Squeaking from carb?
Hi,
I‘ve done a search and can't find this exact problem, just similar ones!
I have an '89 360 GLE, so a B200 engine, and once warmed up there is quite a loud high pitched squeak coming from the carb (or at least it sounds like its from there). You hear it at idle and when cruising, but put your foot down when moving and it stops. I imagine its a leaky gasket on the carb or something, does that sound about right? And is there a common gasket that goes now and again?
Thanks
Mike

Re: Squeaking from carb?
Can't think what that would be. You say squeak, which implies it only for an instant or repeated. Is it more continuous?
What sort of load? Does it happen at tickover. Can you replicate it by just reving the engine?
Fan belts obviously squeak under alternator load or PS load. Timing belt could if say the tensioner was siezed.
You can also have loose bolts creating a high pitch jingle, or metal parts touching other rotating metal parts.

Re: Squeaking from carb?
Yes it a continuous squeak.
You hear it at idle/tickover and at any cruising speed. As soon as you put your foot down more and accelerate it stops. Revving it when stationary doesn't seem to stop it.
Its hard to pin the location down when listening in the engine bay, but it definately seems to be coming from the carb area.

Re: Squeaking from carb?
Nope, I'm 100% sure its not a belt. It sounds like a high pressure air leak or something and seems louder around the back of the carb (when looking from the front of the car).
Re: Squeaking from carb?
Its unusual anyway.
You need to spray or pour some liquid around the carb to detect if there is sucking. WD40 or even water would do. The noise will stop or change when you hit the leak with the liquid.

Re: Squeaking from carb?
well its definately coming from the base of the carb, it sprayed some wd40 around there and the whistle stopped. In fact it hasnt came back yet so guess I'll see how it goes.
Re: Squeaking from carb?
when the gasket seal is broken like this it's possible bits of gasket can get sucked into the engine eventually, partco should still stock a sootable gasket, and it;s only a few nuts to undo, 30 mins tops.
